A police officer in Claremont, California fatally shot a man who backed into him and pinned him to his patrol car.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. yesterday, when the officer tried to pull the suspect over on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle. The suspect refused to stop and a one-mile chase ensued, ending on a dead-end street, police said.

When the officer got out to approach the vehicle the driver backed up, pinning the officer to his patrol car, said Claremont Police Lt. Gary Jenkins.

Fearing for his life the officer fired into the vehicle, critically wounding the suspect, Jenkins said.

"By all appearances, the suspect intentionally backed into the officer with the intent to cause serious bodily harm or to kill him," Jenkins said.

The suspect's name was not released pending notification of family and police declined to identify the officer involved, citing an ongoing investigation.

The officer and suspect were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital, where the suspect died. The officer was treated and released with minor injuries.

Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives and the district attorney's officer were investigating.
