I have an frankenstein 1917 that I plan on using for gun deer season this coming weekend here in Wisconsin. I went out to the range this past weekend and sighted it in. When I got home I thought I noticed a crack on the stock and so took the action off for a closer examination (it was a nasty scratch not a crack). Will I need to head back out to the range to re-zero now that I took off/put back on the action/barrel? I don't use a scope just an old redfield peep sight.
Thanks,
Stu

I don't know what a Frankenstein 1917 is...
Huh? You think you need to sight in again since you pulled the stock off the action/barrel? The sight should be attached to the metal of the receiver and the barrel. As long as you didn't remove them, then just pulling the wood isn't going to change point of aim/impact to the point where you'd notice any micron difference with iron sights at all. (peep or not)

Please don't post the same question in different forums. -No, I'm not a moderator. But if you don't get answers in one, then maybe repost in a different forum. Give it a chance. There's enough clutter here already.

Depending on how the barrel is bedded, differing screw torque could put different pressures on the barrel and change the POI, right?

It could, and it would, if he had a scope mounted and sighted in dead nuts on, down to a frog-hair.
It is unlikely it will make that much differance with open sights though.
Especially if you tightened the guard screws approximately the same as they were before you took it out of the stock.
Course, if it was me, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night until I had shot & checked it again!
If nothing else, I'd want to shoot a few rounds to settle it in the stock bedding again.

OK,
I won't disagree with RCmodel. Now, if it were my prized silloette rifle that I was going to shoot in a match the next weekend, yeah, I'd probaly verify zero before the match.
But with irons (peep), I wouldn't give it one brain cell of thought.
I take my hunting rifle/action out of the stock at least once during hunting season. (especially during bad weather) And never give it thought that my hunting rifle, -that shoots right around MOA is going to be so far off that it would be incapable of a kill shot out to 300yds.

I assume he is talkin' about an M1917.

I have one that I have used for almost 40 years. First twenty years it had iron sights that never went off no matter how many times I pull the stock off. Heck, I carved a new stock for it and POI never changed. The last twenty years it has had a POS scope on it and the only time it has ever needed to be adjusted was the first time at the range after having it bore sighted. Too bad it ain't a coupla pounds lighter.

Thanks for the help. Sorry for the dual post. I'll be better next time. My "Frankenstein" is indeed a m1917. I call it Frankenstein because it is one ugly bubba and because half of the parts are stamped with "E" and the other half with "W"
