Loggerlee November 18, 2008, 04:03 PM My pops recently gave me a 459 to use,I have to give it back some day...
Anyway it's got these home made chunks of wood on it,and it makes the thing difficult to get a good grip on,not to mention that the mag release is hard to operate,I'm wondering what you all recommend as far as grips,I'm 6' but my hands are not all that big,so I need something fairly slim.
Thanks in advance

The Lone Haranguer November 18, 2008, 07:40 PM Try and find some original plastic grip panels at a gun show or from a parts vendor. Also, Hogue (http://www.hogueinc.com/getgrip/merchant.ihtml?id=40&step=2) makes wood grips for this model.
Loggerlee November 18, 2008, 09:03 PM Thanks Haranguer, those are nice looking, not sure how they would look on mine though,it's black framed with a stainless slide.
Thinking something in rubber, the plastic ones that came on the S&W I had before were kinda slippery.
I'm not sure what model my old one was,it was similar to the 459 but was .45acp and stubbier with a smooth hammer, the AWFUL double action on that one turned me off.(traded it for a couple mags for my Para.
isp2605 November 19, 2008, 03:25 PM If you are looking for rubber grips then Pachmayr makes some for the 459. Usually can be found for $30-$40. They are a bit thicker than stock plastic grips. My 39 and 459 wore Pachs for a while when those were my issued duty guns. I liked them on the 39. They didn't do anything for me on my 459. They were OK on the 459 but they added the addition size in the wrong place for my preference. I added an arched back strap on my 459 and stayed with the stock plastic grips. Much improved grip for me.

Dodgeit November 19, 2008, 04:28 PM I may have a couple of sets checkered wood and OEM for the 459 for cheap.

ISP2605,thanks for the info,I don't know much about this brand myself,I'm a 1911 guy mostly.
So wood or plastic stock grips are most likely to work for me then you think?

Can't say. It's personal preference. Hand sizes are all different. You may like the Pachmayrs on the 459. With the arched backstrap I didn't as it put too much bulk on the sides where I didn't want it. I carried the 459 in uniform and on SWAT for a couple of years until I went into plain clothes and carried it there for a while. The Pachmayrs would grab a shirt and show more than factory plastic grips. That may or may not be a concern for you but if you plan on carrying it just something to consider.
The factory plastic grips are about as thin as you can get.
But then there's something to be said for a nicely figured set of wooden grips too. Can't help tho on wood grips for a 459. Never had a set for mine.
Loggerlee November 23, 2008, 01:16 PM isp2605,that's good info,I need to get the grips slimmed some, and I'll be carrying this concealed,as I'm leaving the .357 for the wife.(nothing like getting people all fired up when they see you've got a weapon "concealed")
So I guess I better just find some of the plastic grips that come on the pistol.
Maybe I'll give making my own a try after I get this thing where I can use it...

Good idea. I made a set of plexiglass for a 1911 once. Those were pretty simple. I could change out the picture behind the plexi whenever I got the urge. Had planned on doing the same for my 39 but just never got around to it. Now that you mention it I may have to find some plexi and find something to make some grips for.
