Hi guys,
Well, I got my first deer. It was awesome. The 8mm Mauser did it's job amazingly. 60 yard shot. Destroyed the lung. Deer went down within 20 yards.

Here is my question. I noticed that I only have a few cartridges left of my late fathers days. They are Winchester Super-Speed Power-points. 170 Grain, soft points.

I was wondering what people are shooting today. Give me some options...

Thanks,
Chad

I load my own using Sierra 175 gr.

If all you are hunting is deer then anything you can buy will do the trick. The 8mm is an amazing round that deserves more attention then it gets.

I agree. I was kinda looking for who makes the round? I know Winchester does, I found one my Remington, but it has Magnum at the end and I don't know if I can use them. I know, I'm such a newb...

If you want to stick with domestic factory ammo, Remington and Winchester still make 170gr soft points. Here's a link to Midway's selection for pricing.

Prvi Partizan and Wolf Gold are made by the same plant and are pretty good ammo for the money. Reloadable brass too if it matters. I reload 8mm myself.

The Remington 8mm Magnum is a completely different round from the 8mm Mauser (actually it is the 7.92X57mm Mauser). The magnum round is a commercial creation and is much more powerful than the Mauser round. It will not chamber in your Mauser. I'm pretty sure that Remington loads a round for the 8mm Mauser though. I'm certain that Winchester, Remington, Federal and Hornady all have a loading in this caliber. I understand that the American ammo companies tend to down load the 8mm quite a bit and that the European loadings are much closer to the original military loading of this cartridge.

You might also look at Norma and Sellier&Belliot. Both of those companies load their rounds a little hotter. The domestic stuff from Rem & Win is normally loaded down.

Now is the time to start handloading. Thats the way to get the best ammo for your gun. I also like the Sierra 175 gr Prohunter and 50 grs of IMR 4064 in my 8mm.
