A gunman was killed in a shootout in Cleveland, as a police officer who has been involved in several shootings during his career was shot at but suffered only bruises.
The officer's vest deflected a bullet, police said.
54-year-old Patrolman James Simone, who has been a Cleveland police officer for nearly 30 years, was treated at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The suspect, whose name was not released, died at the same hospital.
The shooting happened about 10:15 p.m. last night after police chased a man driving in a white car for several blocks. Police did not immediately say why the man was pursued.
City resident Rob Ule, who witnessed the confrontation, said he saw several cruisers, including some from suburban police departments, and thought it was a police raid.
He heard police shout "Drop the weapon!" Then he heard about 12 to 15 shots.
Simone, a Vietnam veteran, came to be known as "Supercop" in Cleveland after he was involved in at least 10 shootings. He has received the force's Medal of Valor.
