What is the capable range of the 22 WMR? For rabbits or squirrels?

Thanks,
Chad

Hi Chad...

The .22 magnum is viable to 100-125yds. and a really good rifleman can make it work fairly well to 140-150yds. or so on larger varmints.
It is a lot easier to hit with at 100yds. or less though.

It is actually a very good cartridge and those who take the time to get to know it usually have at least one .22 magnum rifle around for the rest of their life.

A scoped .22 Mag and will give a point-blank range (+/- 1.5") of about 125 yards.

It is entirely possible to hit a small animal much further then that, and kill it deader then Jimmie Hoffa.

However, the .22 Mag is much more destructive then the .22 LR.
If you are planning to eat what you shoot, it will tear up a lot of meat at the closer ranges normally encountered.

In short, it is too much gun (at normal ranges) for hunting Rabbits & Squirrels for the pot.

Are the ranges the same for a 22 WMR and a 22 LR?

The .22lr has lower initial velocity and a slightly shorter EFFICTIVE range. The .22WMR's paper range is closer to 200yd, but for use on game, the above specified ranges. The .22lrs effective range is about 75yd.

Most will agree that 150 yards is do-able with V-max bullets squirrels, groundhogs, etc. For larger things, I would say 100 yards.
