I've got a line on a used T/C Hawken that's kinda rough.

The ramrod is missing.
Both sights are missing.
The blueing is in need of being redone.
There are some surface rust pits on the barrel.
The stock needs some sanding and fresh oil.
The trigger is REALLY light, setting screw is backed out quite a bit though.
I don't know what condition the barrel's inside is (exterior neglect causes condern)

Asking price is $125.95. I offered him $75 for it and was told he's firm on his asking price "for this $500 gun".

I bought a "NIB" Cherokee from him this passed weekend for just over $250.00 and was very pleased with the transaction. Would a Hawken as rough as I've desribed tempt you to give the asking price?

No way.... For the 125 you can probably get a almost brand new gun, once fired... I used to buy those for that all the time. Hunt more..

$50 max, you can find a nice one for $150.

Curious about the cal!

If it's a 50 cal. the barrel is 15/16. A 54 cal would be 1" across the flats.
All Renegade barrels are 1" and would interchange with a 54 Hawken. You could always find a good barrel for either and drop it in, if the orig. barrel is toast.

The Hawkens have gone up in price and the stock and lock alone could cost 125.00

A good used Hawken today is worth around 300.00. Check out Auction Arms and Gun Broker.com. I have seen some sell for more.

Heck! He gave you the Cherokee rifle at 250.00:)

Stay away from it at any price! Just imagine what the insides of the barrel is like, when the outside (the easy part to clean) of the barrel is rusty and pitted.
Even if it is a "TC" with a bad barrel it's junk.

appreciate the input. Overall, it's a confirmation to me that my gut reaction to walk away was a good one.

The store/owner retains "good guy" status in my book, we just don't see eye to eye on this particular gun's value.

He got three sales outta me over the weekend anyhow, so it's not like I'm just in there pickin' at his inventory. Snagged up a '40 vintage model 94 Winchester in .30-30 on Saturday and then a sweet pair of BP's that are virtually "NIB". The Cherokee and a Patriot. He wouldn't dicker on the BP's, but tossed in some powder measures (CVA/brass), and a leather shot bag... and gave me a good deal on two boxes (100 ea) of lead ball for $5/ea.

Sounds like a rough one.
Bargains on much better T/C hawkins are around especially since a lot of folks are switching to inline stuff.

T/C did indeed offer the Hawken in .45. These rifles demand a small premium over the more common .50 caliber - but not in the condition that you describe.

I'd offer him $75 cash, and walk away if he turned me down. It sounds like quite the project gun, but will most likely require a new barrel, which T/C doubtless doesn't have any longer - not in .45. Besides, for the price of a new barrel you could probably buy a much better used Hawken or Renegade.
