Pardner or Maverick?

I have decided that I would much rather have a shotgun for my needs (home defense, fun) before getting a handgun.
I was pretty set on the BPS, being a lefty and all, but I think I feel comfortable with a right ejecting shotgun.
Price has recently become more of an issue than it would have been a month ago (another reason for wanting a shotgun first), and I like both the Pardner Protector and the Maverick 88. Which do you think is better and why?

I am partial to the Maverick... Price is great, you can find them used, in great condition, for around $150-ish...
The mavericks are 95% identical to the Mossberg 500. Every part interchanges between them except the Trigger group (different safety).
They are very reliable, customizable, and worth every penny.

I have the pardner, my first gun. Works well, the pump action has gotten stuck twice, but only after 550 rounds w/out cleaning. I just had to rack it really hard to free it. The guy who sold it to me convinced me it was better than the maverick. I'm sad that my first gun was made in China though. For the price, I'd say, just spend a little more and get an 870. The finish bothers me too, it's a very thin black, so my pistol grip (ATI, fits 870 too) looks weird, conflicting colors. Other than that, I would trust my life to it. Also, the Moss 500 can be found for good prices just a little more than the pardner and maverick.

i love my maverick i picked it up with less than 10 rounds through it for $140 but academy normally has em for under $200 i like the layout of the pump release better than an 870 but im not dissing the 870 in any way shape or form

maverick 88, it has never had a hiccup. only good things, not to mention you can get all kinds of cool stuff that fits a mossberg 500. E.G. side saddle, heat shield, M4 stock, what-nots, hunky-dorys

I recently passed the 1000 round mark with my 7+1 maverick 88 security. For less than $200 its pretty hard to beat. I recently ordered the 28" barrel for it and I'm going to try my hand at the local trap range with it!

My HomeLand Security Shotgun is a 1990 vintage Maverick 88.
Goes BOOM! on request, every time. I bet my bacon on it every single day.
Oringially was equipped with a 28" Mod choke barrel, now wears the 18-1/2" cylinder bored barrel.

My 1991-vintage Mav-88 is still killin' doves, pheasant, rabbit, varmints, and keepin' the bad guys quaking in their boots merely from the sound of racking the slide..
I like the idea that the Mav 88 shares many of the same parts as the Mossberg 500
+1 for the Maverick

I would get the Pardner Pump because it has steel receiver. The 870 parts & accessories interchange which is why it makes it a good choice. You will spend less money on the PP in the long run if you decide to do some upgrades.
The Pardner Protector is a very robust shotgun.
Thick High Carbon steel receiver
Machine extractor & ejector
Metal trigger guard
Excellent shell lifter design - prevents the shell from being caught between the bolt & lifter
Take a look at the Norinco 982 with ghost ring sights. Same shotgun as the Pardner Protector with a true 870 style receiver.
Here is a nice Canadian shorty 982 called the Grizzly beside a nice 870. These are not my shotguns.

Another vote for the Maverick 88. With 7+1 capability, completely reliable, easy to accessorize, it is just a great gun.
I put a side saddle on mine, added a pistol buttstock, tac light, and I have 10 rounds of 00 buck, 4 rounds of 1 1/4 oz slugs, ready to rock and roll.
On a sidenote, I took it out to shoot skeet a few times just for fun and to check reliablity, handled like a champ.
Great value and great gun.

Given a choice of only those two guns, I'd take the Maverick all day long.

The Pardner will probably prove more robust in the long run, unless you mod the forearm of the Mossberg to use a 500 tube/forearm.

The Maverick 88 is 95% of an M500 for about 75% of the price. The foreend is different from a M500. It also has the (for me) more desireable cross-bolt safety instead of the M500's tang safety. I've had an M88 now for 12 years, no problems EVER. I added a Hogue overmolded buttstock and it is the "back door gun" for when things go bump in the night out in the field. The NEF I shot was a decent gun, but given the two, I would take the Mossberg hands down.
