I recently fired a .308 single shot pistol that would make a great hunting gun. It got me thinking about how cool it would be to have one that fires the 39r. Has anyone ever seen one?

MICHAEL T November 20, 2008, 04:29 PM I guess you could find one if you looked But I don't consider the 7.62x39 a long range round.Even when fired from a rifle KBintheSLC November 20, 2008, 04:35 PM But I don't consider the 7.62x39 a long range round Neither is a .223, but that didnt stop Kel-Tec from making a "long-range" pistol around it. I'm thinking the 39r would go further than a regular pistol round. If I can hit a 7" steel plate at 400 yards with my AK, I should be able to hit the same plate with that round on a scoped pistol at 200 yards. I am assuming that 200 yards would qualify as "long range" for a pistol... or maybe you have some sort of super pistol that does 1000 yard hits... offhand. Anyway... thanks for enlightening me. Back on topic. Please refrain from "enlightening" me any further on why you think this is a bad idea, and please share your knowledge on the whereabouts of such a pistol... if any. crushbup November 20, 2008, 05:00 PM You'd probably have to have it custom made unless you buy an AK pistol and use magazines pinned to 1rd capacity and a side-rail scope. rcmodel November 20, 2008, 05:37 PM Ask and you shall receive! TC Encore + TC custom shop barrel in 7.62x39. It is a standard caliber listing in blue or stainless. http://www.tcarms.com/customShop/chart_encore_pistol.php rcmodel KBintheSLC November 20, 2008, 05:50 PM Ask and you shall receive! RCMODEL, Ye hath spoketh unto me, and I dooeth appreciateth it. The Thompson Encore model B30139 is exactly what I am speaking of. If I toss a 12" bull barrel on there, I bet it would make a great hunting weapon for a variety of medium sized game. Now I just need to dig up the $700-800... Thanks a lot for the guidance! redneck2 November 20, 2008, 05:53 PM I went to a metallic shoot a few years ago. Pretty amazing what some of those guys could do with Contender type pistols. Since the 7.62x39 is pretty close to a .30-30, it should do fine. The guy I was with was shooting a 7-30 Waters. Actually, probably your limiting factor would be ammo quality. Most 7.62 I've seen is more for spray and pray than accuracy. FWIW, my .357 Herrett is capable of maybe 1 1/2" at 100 yards with my hand loads. This is off a good bench with sandbags with a Weaver scope. KBintheSLC November 21, 2008, 03:08 PM Most 7.62 I've seen is more for spray and pray than accuracy. I am a firm believer that this notion has been derived by lousy technique, and lousy stock sights. I have a Yugo underfolder with a railed fore-end upon which I have mounted a Burris Scout Scope. I normally use Brown Bear Russian ammo through it. With this setup, I can hit a 7" steel plate at 400 yards 9 times out of 10. I even have a better hit ratio than my shooting buddy with his M4 and an EoTech on top. The accuracy of a decent AK is very good. I would say that I am averaging between 1.5 and 2 MOA. If I use premium American hunting ammo, I would say 1.5 MOA is standard. As I said before, my experience tells me that it is the fault of the shooter, not the AK or the ammo. I think a nice single shot TC in 39R will make an excellent hunter inside of 200 yards. Plus I won't have to invest in another caliber. greyling22 November 21, 2008, 06:58 PM just to offer a different take on a long range pistol, how about a remington xp-100 in 223 or 35 rem. or maybe a savage striker. I believe weatherby made a bolt action pistol too. but thompson is the best route in terms of actually finding a 7.62x39. Matthew Courtney November 25, 2008, 11:20 AM The Encore is a quality firearm. PO2Hammer November 25, 2008, 02:04 PM Quite a few guys over at the single shot forum use the 7.62. Be aware that some barrels are .308", and some are .311". 30-30 and 7-30 are other calibers to consider in the same power level. Better selection of factory loads.
