I was perusing an old thread (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=328967) for photos of single actions and just didn't get see enough to wet my whistle. If you are aware of another thread (besides the "Revolver Picture thread of all time" nice as it is), please point me to it. It would be much appreciated if any would care to post photos of their single actions here.
Here are mine (both Rugers; a Bisley Vaqero in .44 mag and an older Single Six .22LR):

Hopefully your photography:uhoh: equipment and skills are better than mine:)
Thanks,
Greg

This is the revolver I'm carrying as I read this thread, so I took a pic with my phone on the printer to show. It is a Uberti cattleman 3" Sheriff .45LC. I carry silvertips in it. I have a 1911 5" I carry CCW when I can, but I live out in the country so to just run out to the barn, down to the store or to go out at night, it is great to put in my front or back pocket, or coat pocket.

By the way, this had birdshead grips, but I didn't like them, so I took the grips off my 1851 navy and now I love the feel. I just have to replace the navy's grips now.......

There are some great looking SA revolvers here but am I the only one that can't get excited about a revolver without a top strap? To me they just don't look right .... :( . I'd take a Remington 1858 over any Colt (prior to the 1873 model) but then again I guess that's obvious from my "handle". I'm still holding off on buying an 1858 Remington until some company here in the US has the business ball$ to offer a quality product. Hartford Armory was for a while and USFA is "thinking" about it.

I'm the same way...I like a lot of different Colt designs, but not the old ones without the top strap. That's why I bought a '58 too.:D

Madcratebuilder, what's that last revolver you posted? The one with all the ... widgets... hanging off of it.
That is a LeMat revolver, Cavalry model. Favored by Confederate officers during the war of Northern aggression. It is a 9 round 44 cal cap and ball with a 18ga (approx)under barrel. I'm working up shot and round ball loads for the 18ga, rough job but I'll preserver. Made by Pietta, I rate it a B+ in fit and finish, it does have it's quirks.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/lemat01.jpg
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/lemat02.jpg

The open top, closed top debate. I like them both. Many considered this the most powerfull revolver till the 357 came along. The Colt Walker can load 55gr of holy black and a 44 cal conical bullet.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/walker1.jpg

One of my nicest Remingtons is this NMA in nickle, made in 79 and marketed by Navy Arms. I believe it was made by Sile Co. but not sure about that. It is a very accurate revolver.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/nicklerem01.jpg

This revolver is this Rogers&Spencer 1865 model. Another revolver used by Confederate soldiers. This 1979 one was made by Armi San Paolo. Nice shooter, but I find the hammer spur sets high and is hard to cock single handed. Unusual taper at the bottom of the grip.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/RS01.jpg

My favorite, best feeling, I'm a gunslinger, revolver is this 51 Colt Navy. A 36 cal, it has such a natural aim to it I don't get with any others. I have read that this was bill hickcocks favorite pistol. This one was made in 64 by Uberti and is an A+ revolver in fit and finish.

don't have the personal knowledge to display my own photos, so I thumbnailed a few of the ones that I own from the manufacturer's website...

http://www.uberti.com/firearms/single_action_cattleman.php

first one is an Uberti Cattleman Hombre w/ brass trigger guard & handle frame; .45 Long Colt; bought NIB for $388  (read below & you'll understand the EEK emoticon)
http://www.uberti.com/firearms/images/1873_cattleman_hombre_nm_matte_lg.jpg

the second one is an Uberti Cattleman Chisholm w/ anondized aluminum trigger guard & handle frame; .45 Long Colt; bought used for $250; if I was a bit quicker, I could have had a used Hombre from the same shop for $250...one of my 'friends' called & asked if the used Hombre he saw was mine & if I had sold it; I went & snagged the Chisholm before it disappeared ;)
http://www.uberti.com/firearms/images/1873_cattleman_chisholm_nm_lg.jpg

fodder shot thru them includes a variety of major manufacturers' cowboy loads, Remington 225 gr LSWC for a woods walking load, and Blazer (aluminum cased) 200 gr jhp (Speer Gold Dots) for HD and camp defense

gb6491, Thanks for asking, I am a SASS member and a "Cowboy Action Shooter", these are my main match pistols. They are chambered in .45 Colt, and the grips are Elk made by Pat Grasshorn AKA "Executioner" who is also a CAS shooter. They started life as SS Bisleys, the frames were bead blasted to a matt finish, and a free spin pawl installed. I had some engraving applied, around the cylinder where the "Ruger ring" is, and had the Ruger warning removed from the barrel. The 3rd one is a .22LR that is a trainer. I suffered a spinal cord injury that prevented me from shooting for almost a year. I used the .22 to practice with until I could handle the .45s, notice the grip size is the same on all of them.

That 475 is SWEET. I've been tempted to add this pic of my FA 353 to this thread. But this has been posted before, so I was holding off. But after seeing yours, I decided to go ahead. I love these revolvers.

Hard to see the gun, but it's a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt. First time shooting "ruger only" loads, I wasn't prepared for the recoil. But I managed to avoid the front sight making a dent in my forehead!

No, that's the range underneath the swimming pool in the athletics building at Michigan Tech. Only indoor range in the UP! Actually I'm not sure about that, but I wouldn't be surprised.

RJM and denwego,
How well do those 38 Spl. conversions shoot? Any load restrictions?
Regards,
Greg

The manual for my conversion says "the firing of +p ammunition is not recommended beyond occasional use, and could void the warranty on components of the barrel, cylinder, and frame." The metal around the chamber looks as thick as a .38+P spec revolver my wife has, but the open top makes me think that it would be a bad idea. Anything in factory loads of .38Spl and lower (cowboy loads, etc) run just fine in it. Incidentally, the lubricated bullets with many cowboy loads really make a good difference on maximizing the life of a barrel!

Edit - If it's a true conversion from a black powder, I wouldn't use anything more than cowboy to be on the safe side! Gotta make sure!

RJM
April 7, 2009, 06:22 PM
I actually shot some +p stuff through mine with no ill effects, about thirty rounds. I am not using it as a defensive gun so for range shooting I just put regular .38 special stuff through it. These colts will take a decent deal of abuse, the cylinder "spindle rod thingy" is pretty substantial.

Surprisingly accurate for a gun sportin' terrible sights, actually my front sight (brass thingy) flew off a couple of range sessions ago and I lost it. The last couple of times I shot I just aimed down the barrel and it seemed to work fine. I like it.

I've decided to add this NIB Ruger Blackhawk Bisley to my growing collection of .45 Colt revolvers. This will put me at three single actions and one double action in what has become my favorite caliber. I've been looking for a stainless steel Blackhawk in .45 Colt but it's hard to find them without the internal lock these days. This Bisley model comes with two cylinders and no internal lock ... plus it's just a stunning looking revolver.

the pic is from the Uberti website, but you get the idea...

http://www.uberti.com/firearms/images/1873_cattleman_hombre_nm_matte_lg.jpg

the satin brass grip frame doesn't rust with my salty sweat, the matte finish can be 'touched' up with a bluing pen and be blended in nicely, and while not able to withstand 'hotrod' .45 Colt hunting loads it sends a large caliber and heavy pill downrange with some ooommmppphhh!!!

CCI Blazer 200gr jhp @ 1000fps from a 7.26" barrel (I figure @ 850 to 875 fps from my shorter barrel) or Remington Express 225gr lswc solid @ 960 fps from a 5" barrel (I figure @ 900 to 925 fps from my shorter barrel)

Recently, I stripped off the matte finish and reblued it. I think it came out pretty well. Looks more like an authentic six shooter now. Pics to follow when I get a chance.http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac140/darryljwright/POTO0003.jpg

but here's my armi san marco Remington 1858 (poor picture quality)

This thread needs my everyday carry gun. Now it has solid sterling silver eagle grips made by a NY jeweler from melted down Mexican pesos. They were a gift to me from a old time gunsith who used to frequent the Texas Mexican border and he liked those old silver pesos. It's the only jewelry I wear:

Electric Factory, I love that holster, it looks ...comfortable. Ever time I go through this thread I see guns I missed the last time. Obviously SA's are alive and well.
My newest SA, a Lee commemorative, to match my Grant commemorative.

Harve Curry that is a pretty pistol!

I posted this Vaquero earlier in the thread, but just recently picked up some stag for it; not the best looking, but I like it better than the faux ivory that was on it.

Not a western style. But, it is a single action. So here is something completely different.
My H&R model 777 Ultra Sportsman.
Single action target revolver.
1939 manufacture
# 957 of about 1000 made.

Bought one of the NM Blackhawk 44 Specials. Hadn't had any single actions since about 1994-5, although my first three handguns were Rugers SAs. That Flat-top NM made me long for the 3-screw Flat-tops I used to own so I started hunting. Found these two, at considerably inflated prices from what I remembered (LOL):

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww224/desertarcher/2009_1113AB.jpg

The first one is a Blackhawk 357, 6-1/2". The second is a Blackhawk 44 Mag, also with a 6-1/2" barrel. The grip frame of the 44 has been satin nickeled and the original, steel ejector rod housing replaced with an aluminum version. I'm looking for a steel one on the internet.

Now I have to sell the 44 Special. Just can't take that New Model action once I've handled the originals again. (smile)

Any REAL differences between the Uberti clones? I see Cimarron has their "Evil Roy", and Uberti has their "El Patron" models which appear to be their suped up models....but all in all, are these worth the extra money for something that is just going to go into my fun gun collection? I also see there is a company named Taylor and their's is the "Smoke Wagon"....

A co-worker put the SAA bug in me...:)
Thanks in advance for any input

Don't own any myself (so please take the following with that in mind), but from what I have read and, as all are made by Uberti, the three seem very similar; ready to shoot competition guns with some different cosmetic touches.

The Cimarron is supposedly tuned by their gunsmith:
"The Evil Roy version of the Cimarron Model ‘P’ features a wide square notch rear and wide constant width front sight, slim grips hand checkered European walnut, an action tuned in the U.S. by a skilled gunsmith complete with lightened trigger and hammer springs, no creep trigger pull, and improved internals for reliability." (also see this (http://www.gunblast.com/Cimarron-Mernickle_EvilRoy.htm))

Uberti says the same about the El Patron:
"You can depend on it! Lightning fast and reliable, shot after shot—in the world of single action revolvers Uberti's new hand-tuned Cattleman model is truly “the boss,” or El Patrón, as the Vaqueros of the old west would say. The gunsmiths at Uberti have fitted each El Patrón with high-grade, US-manufactured Wolff springs and each revolver has been carefully tested and certified for flawless fit and function. The result is a single-action that is reliable, lighter and faster with a smooth-tuned action."

Taylor states that their deluxe Smokewagon has additional tuning:
"The deluxe edition model also includes custom tuning; custom hammer and base pin springs; trigger-spring at three pounds; jig-cut, positive angles on all triggers and sears for crisp, reliable action; a coil-loaded hand; and wire bolt and trigger springs." This additonal tuning gets some favorable nods over at CASCity (http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,18711.0.html).

You might also want to look at a tuned USFA Rodeo (http://www.cascity.com/?p=414).

As a fun gun, all three (or four with the USFA) would probably serve just as well in their, shall we say, "stock" (less expensive) form. I think a Ruger should be considered here as well. Here's an interesting read: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=465261

Cimarron and Uberti make pretty good stuff right now. I wouldn't buy one unless I could examine it first though. I've found that while they have good tight lock up and such, the barrels are often over or undertimed. Kind of disappointing.

I would hope their premium models don't suffer from the same lack of QC.
