Hi all,

I am a newbie here, and a newbie deer hunter. got ten days left to fill my tag for this season (only one per year here in Maine, and it must be a buck, unless you win the lottery for an antlerless deer). Anyway, i am currently using a Winchester 94 in 30-30 which i borrowed from a friend. I am finally comfortable enough with it to attempt to shoot something this year. my question though is regarding next year (never too early to prepare, right?) id like to buy a scoped 30-06, any recommendations for a beginner on budget? I'd prefer relatively modern sporting arms rather than milsurp.

thanks in advance

Jonathan

check out marlin, mossberg, stevens, and savage

they are all good priced riflesand come in .30-06

i had my shop order me a marlin xl7 in .30-06 today total was 341 with tax
that leaves you 139 for optics the ones i listed are about that range

id stay away from the lower end remingtons

As soon as deer season is over, start checking the used racks at your local gunstores and pawn shops. A lot of good rifles get traded in. Stay away from the cheapo Rems and Savages. You should be able to find a good used Rem, Ruger, Win, or Savage for under $500 with scope.A quality rifle will last you a lifetime and your kids and grandkids will still be enjoying it long after you're gone.

This is an outstanding package deal for a fine 30-06.

I'd go Savage package deal or get the Mossberg ATR. BTW my ATR shoots 3/4" groups at 100yrds with Federal 150gr SP Power Shok $12.97 at Wally World!

Stay away from the cheapo Rems and Savages.

Much agreed. I have a Remington 710 (came with a scope). Not terrible but could have done much better for same price or less.

A word of advice: the scope you pick is far more important than the rifle it's mounted on. If you have to, buy a quality scope, then buy a used rifle from a pawn shop. Never skimp on glass!
