I have a dilemma. I have a Colt .357 4" circa 1961 in 98% condition. Absolutely beautiful gun through and through. I also have a hard chromed 586-1 4" in the same condition. Also a great gun. They both feel great in the hand and have equally great single and double action pulls. Although I'd love to keep them both, things are a little tight financially and one has to go. Which would you keep and why?

I would keep the Colt .357. There aren't too many around and they're not making any more. The 586 is an excellent revolver but they aren't that hard to find.

A beautiful old COLT like that is harder and harder to find these days, and bring a REAL Premium...

Keep em both, put the COLT in the vault and shoot the S&W =P

If I had a nice '63 Studebaker Avanti with the 289 and supercharger along with a lightly driven 2005 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer, I'd keep the Avanti. Price has nothing to do with it, but perceived value. The Ford may have a higher Bluebook, but the Studebaker more value to me.

You can always get another 586. Even though the used Colt market is alive and well, I wouldn't want to chance never having that model again. However, if things are really tight and there aren't many options available, the Colt would probably fetch a higher price, and the 586 isn't exactly chopped liver.

A colt which model?
For a short time, Colt made a model simply called the .357 Magnum and it was their better quality revolver. When the Python came out, it was their best quality revolver and the .357 Magnum was discontinued after a while since most people stepping up went with the Python. That was what I referred to in my first post that there weren't many made.

A while back I had a similar situation where I had three .357's and could only keep one. I had a Colt 6" Trooper Mk.V, a S&W 4" Model 686, and a Ruger 4" GP100. I initially choose the Smith because it had a better DA/SA trigger than the Ruger. However the Colt was every bit the equal of the Smith in fit, finish, and function. But I thought the shorter 4" barrel made it more versatile than the 6" one, so I kept the Smith. In retrospect, I should have kept the Colt and replaced the Smith somewhere down the road when I had more money. So I would definitely say, keep the Colt.
