Looks as if it has boiled down to two rifles [out of about twelve centerfires.] for Monday's opener. I work this weekend 12 hours Sat and Sun, and wont have time to get out to the [ridiculously crowded] firing range.

So...

My scoped M4 shooting 65 grain Sierra GameKings @ ~2600fps grouping about .75-1.00 inch at 100 yards.

*or*

scoped CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 shooting 123gr. Hornady Interlocks (.310") @~2350fps, also grouping into about an inch at 100 yards.

Think Ill be alright with the CZ? I havent shot any deer with the 7.62 yet... think Ill be alright, West Virignia style, i.e. shots out to maybe 150 max? But more than likely inside of 75 yards. ??????????????????

150 yards with the CZ should be fine if all the research I have done lately is accurate.

The 7.62 x 39 is pretty much identical to the 30-30 Win in ballistics. The 30-30 has been taking deer down consistently for over 100 years. You'll have no issue with it.

BTW, I have a CZ 527 and LOVE IT.

I have had good results with a .223 with 55 gr soft points. I think you have to be a little more picky with shot placement with the .223 as it may not penetrate as well. But either sounds good to me. I have killed big Minnesota deer with both.

The Hornady 123gr in 7.62x39 does fine in deer - BTDT. I've taken a number of deer and a few hog with it.

Using the AR will make you able to say "see, this is a HUNTING rifle", but other than that, i ahve no clue. I would take whichever i like more. I like my AR best out of all my guns, so that is my choice.
