Can anyone here tell me how the 9x18 Makarov and .32 H&R Magnum cartridges compare in terms of effectiveness as a SD round. Thanks.

It seems unlikely.
You will get a lot of guesses, but I know of no empirical data to support either one.
IMO though:
A 90 grain 363" bullet going 975 FPS makes a bigger hole then an 85 grain 312" bullet going 1,000 FPS!
Just can't beat bigger holes!

I looked up the ballistics from the same
company, Reeds Ammo & Research offers:
.32 H&R Mag.
100 gr. Hornady XTP JHP @ 1,200 fPS
9mm Mak arov
95 gr. Hornady XTP JHP @ 1,047 FPS
So the smaller dia. bullet has a bit of velocity and
sectional density but what platforms are we talking
about for SD?
Ruger SP-101 or S&W 631 - 6 shot .32 H&R Mag.
CZ 82 12 shot double stack in 9mm Mak.
I'd take the Mak with these choices.

Thanks for the info/replies.
The platforms are Polish P-64 & S&W 432PD.

I would not wish to get hit with either one of 'em. I carry a Mak loaded +P (I suppose you could say I couldn't find +P data so I installed heavy recoil spring and upped the powder .3 gr) loaded with the Speer FMJ's in mag and an XTP in chamber.
I've shot the Mak load into phone books, it's impressive.

I doubt you will ever see 1,200 FPS out of a snubby S&W .32 Mag.

You very likely will see 975 FPS out of a MAK though!

I have a similar comparison, a FEG BR61 and an S&W 431PD. I figure they are enough of a wash to just carry the one I feel like.

hmmm....
I would prefer the MAK as a carry round in Urban setting, the .32 as a Home Gun / rural gun...
So...
BOTH! :)

It's hard for me to overlook my partiality to the Makarov pistol and the 9x18 cartridge.

I would decide on which gun fit my needs better. Is a quick reload more important? Is absolute reliability?
Both are at the bottom of the power scale, so whichever one I could shoot more accurately might be the deciding factor for me.

Probably the Mak although I consider it to be about as "low" as I'd really want to go in terms of power.
Better still would be a .38 snubby instead of either. A 158 grain SWC doesn't look like much on paper but it's firing a fairly heavy bullet that will penetrate and be cutting a .357 diameter hole no matter what.

Well, you got to figure that the Mak started life as a police pistol. And the Ruskies aren't as stupid as they're commonly made out to be.

Yea! But see, those Nazi Storm Troopers were only about half as tough and hard to stop as modern day low-files you might be accosted by on the street today! :D
