Our local paper (Portland Press Herald) ran a story on this report. They made this sound like an utter travesty and that the state should be ashamed. What the paper and the Brady Bunch conveniently forget to mention is that Maine has one of the lowest incidences of gun related injury to children of any state in the nation. I guess that this disproves their theory that we need laws to keep our kids safe. With this being the case, I'm glad we got an F.

The Press Herald also wonders why I keep using profanity when they call to have me subscribe to their rag.

A. The top 5 states with the lowest per capita homocide rates each received a D+ or "better" from Brady (Sect A Below)

B. Two of the five states with the highest per capital homocide rates received a Brady "A" (and three received an F) (Sect B)

C. The average per capita homocide rate for all "A" variant rated states is 12.34 (Sect C)

D. The average per capita homocide rate for all "F" variant rated states is 7.51 (Sect D)

Interesting..... I wonder how all "violent crime" would stack up against the ratings....

Looks to me like gun laws don't really make you any safer after all. I have to thank the Brady bunch for giving me the grading system to help demonstrate this easy to understand analysis.

Maryland has lead the nation in armed robbery for about six years running.

Maryland also just moved up to the second highest level of violent crime.

Most of this crime is happening in Baltimore City and Prince Georges County (borders some of the worst parts of Washington DC.

Interestingly, though is that Florida is number one in violent crime with its D+ rating and shall issue CCW with about 400,000 licensees.

But, I bet a big part of Florida's problem is all the transients, tourists and illegal aliens committing much of the violent crime.

Anybody have any information on this?

I am thoroughly dissapointed. How can Florida possibly be rated lower than Louisiana, I protest, give my state an F, they OKed CCW long before La.

I see no reason to visit any of the "A" states and spend my time constantly wondering when or if I will be a mugging or robbery viuctim because I am denied the means to defuse the situation.

Marylander's are desperately working to change that A to something a lot lower with the passing of shall-issue CCW. Hopefully we get it this time around, cause the whole CCW licensing department stinks of corruption.

If anyone has the time, it would be interesting to compare the the Brady grades to child gun death rates. I know for certain that their only A, Maryland, has a high gun death rate. Problem is the definition of "child" in the statistics. Often it's below 21, which just happens to cover most of the gang bangers, violent criminals, etc. If some reliable statistics defining a "child" as a pre-teen existed, that would be very interesting.

(Springfield, VA) -- Gun Owners of America chided the recent issue of the "Gun Violence Report Card," an annual report that is published by the Brady Campaign.

"Once again, the Brady Campaign has flunked out," said GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt. "Their report card has nothing to do with reality."

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence issues their grades on the basis of how restrictive the gun laws of a state are. But their grades have nothing to do with the level of violent crime or murder in the states.

"South Dakota is the safest state in the nation. They have a substantial percentage of the population permitted to carry concealed weapons," Pratt said. "That is one of the reasons South Dakota was given a D on the Brady Report Card.

"South Dakota's murder rate is 0.9 per 100,000 people according to the FBI's Crime in the United States 2001. This is well below the national murder rate which is 5.9 per 100,000."

Vermont and North Dakota also allow citizens to carry firearms and enjoy very, very low murder rates (1.1 per 100,000 people). Nevertheless, the Brady Campaign gave these states a D- and D respectively.

"Interesting," said Pratt. "The three states where plenty of people are freely packing a piece are also the safest in the country.

"At the other end of the Brady Report Card, we find that Maryland garnered the sole A. It has the fifth highest murder rate in the country with 8.3 per 100,000 people. The state is a Mecca for gun control and has the dubious distinction of having a murder rate that is in the top 10 percent of the nation.

"If one were to move to a state because of its safety, one would certainly not want to go by the Brady Report Card," Pratt said. "Perhaps the Brady Campaign should get an F for placing their failed gun control agenda over the safety of American lives."

Could you please elaborate on what you were saying about the possibility of a shall issue in MD. Is there an actual bill being brought up to Ehrlich for a shall issue, or is this all just talk and no action. Also, do you know any specifics, as the age requirements and such? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
