I just recently purchased a 300 savage. Where would I find the model number.
It has a scope mounted. all I can find is 300 savage . the serial number is 591xxx. Any idea what the vintage is it has a brass counter on the side. I need to find the model number so I can register the rifle.
Thanks for any help and advise.
George

It's a Savage Model 99. At some point they started adding initials after the 99, but IIRC, that was after they stopped putting in the little window in the frame so you could read the number of rounds left.

Check here for date of manufacture:

Thank you for the info. Where is this on the rifle is it under the sight? also is there anyway to determine vintage by serial number.
Im not familar with the savage , I just puchased it for $100.00 which I thought was a good buy considering the rifle came with a good scope and case and is in pretty good condition

Thanks Coyote for the info, it would appear to be 1951. You mentioned 11RC what does this mean?
Thanks again

Thank You all for the information. The rifle dosn't have a detachable clip it loads from the top so iI guess it must be rotary:confused:what ever that is LOL. the bore appears to look good. The rifle has been used by an pretty experienaced woodsman and he looked after it. He was in his 90s when he passed away:( .
Any other info would be greatly appriciated
Thanks again all

Hey George. That magazine style has a spindle in the middle of it, might help to picture it as being like a revolver cylinder with just little abbreviated fins sticking out of the middle instead of holes for the cartridges... it's spring loaded about like the roller in an old-style pulldown window shade, so when you fill it with cartridges, you're rotating that spindle against the spring's tension. Called rotary because, well, it rotates. :)
