Got a free beater rifle!

My father paid $50 for this and realized that it was in rougher condition than he wanted, so he gave it to me.

It's a Lee Enfield No.4 Mk 1 that is stamped Long Branch 1943.

The stock is rough, the fore end and upper hanguard are missing, as is the rear sight assy and the front sight hood. The rear sight that is on it, what ever it came off of, is drilled, tapped and screwed to the barrel.

The good news is that the action is good with a good condition chamber and bright, sharp rifling.

I did some reasearch on the net and for about $100 shipped I can order a complete original stock set, the rear sight assy, front sight hood, and replacement forearm/hand guard bands.

I'm thinking about taking this route and restoring this rifle to it's original glory. What do y'all think?

Nice; can't beat a free gun, especially an Enfield! :)

I'd keep the stock, unless it's cracked or something. It's got character.

Clean it up, check headspace and go shooting! Wouldn't put a dime in to it unless it shoots!

All she needs is a little TLC. Good find and great deal.

jpwilly, it isn't going to shoot very well without the sights on it...

I would spend the $100, fix it up and go shoot with it.

Sounds like it has sights, just not the original rear.

Congrats on a fun project gun. If it were mine, I wouldn't put a bunch of money into restoring it--it's been drilled for the rear sight and other mods may have been made (how's the muzzle crown?). I would probably opt for the rear adjustable peep sight, from springfield sporters.

I agree with jpwilly. Find out if she's a shooter before further investments. If she isn't, fix that first or retire her to the wall above the fireplace.

In looking at the photos, I'm not sure this gun hasn't been rebarreled. Please make sure of the chamber before lighting this one up!

I haven't fired it yet, but it does fire. The person that my father got it from said that it has been about two years since he has, but he used to use it as a plinker.
