Slide slam on empty chamber

Could someone explain exactly what can/will happen by slamming the slide on an empty chamber, or direct me to a previous thread on this?
And let me THANK ALL of you for the really informative threads here! I do not plan to do my own gunsmithing, but it sure is great to get a detailed understanding on how the 1911's work!
Also, how is the trigger mechanism affected by doing this?

If you want to know all things 1911 buy Jerry Kuhnhausen's shop manual. It's not cheap but it will save you lots of money. Do not drop the slide on a empty 1911.

Possible: Hammering of barrel and breach face; hammering of the pin (slide stop) and elongation of the holes on the frame where it resides. Extractor damage from barrel. "Bouncing" of sensitive sear/hammer hook surfaces.

I never had a problem dropping the slide, but some folks go right off the track at the mere thought.
I don't recommend watching TV while dropping the slide hour after hour, but once in a while is not going to hurt any pistol I would buy.

I have seen a few people flip out seeing the slide on a 1911 get dropped on an empty chamber, and it was not even their gun. I feel the same as Jim about this, once in a while should not hurt a thing.

Think of it like slamming the door on someone else's new car really hard. It's unnecessary and rude.

...I , too, feel the occasional drop wont hurt anything. As a manufacturer and gunsmith, "occasional" happens a lot around here with no adverse effect
