So after not seeing anything all season, I decide to redeem myself this thanksgiving holiday.

I also have been using my STG58. I've taken it deer hunting numerous times, but never gotten a chance to shoot anything. I'm running iron sights now, so hunting towards dusk can be tricky.

Tonight was the second to last hunt I could get in before I had to go back to school and study for finals. It had just rain. Skies were overcast and dark. I was on an old stand, nick-named "The Meat Stand".

It lived up to its name tonight.

I ran up on a few deer walking to the stand. After I got into the stand, I waited. Sure enough they came out again. I watched them for about thirty minutes. One large doe and three yearlings. The Doe was skiddish, not wanting to give me a broadside shot. She also stayed near the woods, while her kids were out in the oat patch.

So she kind of blended in... and it was getting dark...

and if any of you guys have shot a FAL, you know those iron sights don't work worth a dang in the dark. As much as I love the rifle, I know that's one of its limitations.

Finally I get a semi-halfway broadside look of the doe. It was 5:20 when I made the shot.

And the doe RAN! Right into the thickest thicket on the whole lease. :cuss::cuss::cuss:

I just KNEW I made the shot! 80 yards, turned slightly toward the stand, fading light, but I knew I lined up the sights. But the doe didn't look like it was hit at all.

My dad and I checked the place I thought I hit it at. But we found blood a bit farther out. A trail ran right into the thicket. Thirty yards into a thicket (and me, in shorts, pushing through briar patches every other step :o ) we found her.

When I dragged the doe back into the clearing, it was completely dark. I lifted it into the back of the truck and we took it home.

It's a pretty big Doe too.

A few pictures from the night

Now notice here, my dog is 90 pounds of muscle and fur and some fat. This doe was just about as big as they come.

I had a guy ask me what kind of ammo I used. He has missed four deer this year with his scoped bolt gun. All within 100 yards. He's switched from some really expensive Winchester ammo to some really expensive Federal ammo.

I hated to tell him that I used whatever was cheapest, which for right now meant Monarch (Prvi) at Academy.

And here's how you make friends, I'm giving one of the backstraps (these things are monsterous) to my girlfriend's dad. :D
