A buddy just inherited a Browning BAR 300 win mag in excellent condition. It is an older Belgium/Portugal gun. I did not know how to disassemble it completely so I hosed it out with gun scrubber, stripped the copper fouling, and wiped it down for him. We picked up some ammo 180 grain Remington and intend to shoot it next week.

I know little about this rifle and this is the first one I have ever held/shot, so my questions are as follows:

1. Are there any adjustments/checks that I should perform on the rifle prior to firing it, gas system, etc?
2. Are there any specific areas that I need to be sure to lube?
3. Any quirks with this rifle, anything else I need to know?
4. Should I expect massive amounts of recoil with the rifle or does the action soften it up a bit?

Why don't you download the manual from Browning?

Here is the link for all the pre 1993 models of the BAR. That should answer some of your questions.

Quirks? Well they are not known for their accuracy.

Massive amounts of recoil is relative. Since it is a semi, it will be less than a .300 bolt gun with a similar barrel and weight. But I don't know what you are used to shooting and consider massive. Most men should not experience much difficulty shooting it. I have a few .300's and don't have issues with recoil, but I am used to it.
