Phoenix, U.S., January 14, 2003 (EFE)-

The governor of Arizona promised visiting Mexican lawmakers that she would sign legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants in that state to obtain driver's licenses.

Janet Napolitano met with five members of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies' Foreign Relations Committee last weekend, just days before she was scheduled to be sworn in as governor of Arizona.

In 1994, Arizona passed a law prohibiting those without social security numbers from obtaining a driver's license.

Since then, undocumented immigrants have been forced to drive without a license and without auto insurance, which requires applicants to have a valid license.

The legislators also discussed trafficking in undocumented immigrants along the Arizona-Sonora border.

The delegation expressed concern about actions taken by civilian groups that patrol the border.

The deaths in 2002 of more than 100 undocumented Mexican immigrants in the Arizona desert prompted the five lawmakers to travel to Arizona to meet with government officials and human rights activists.

"We're very pleased with the governor's position, and hope that our fellow countrymen can obtain driver's licenses in the very near future," Congressman Efren Leyva Acevedo said.

Granting driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants was a campaign promise Napolitano made to the state's Hispanic community. EFE

Aren't Governors supposed to up hold the law? (not that TN's Gov is any better--only a few more days)

Right, "forced to drive without insurance..." Somehow I doubt that not being able to get a license is what's stopping these people from purchasing insurance. I also doubt that the no-SSN law was stopping them from getting a license... maybe it had more to do with BEING IN THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY!!!

I really doubt that repealing the law is really going to change anything by itself. Illegals will still drive cars without licenses or insurance (or greencards, for that matter), so it really doesn't matter. What does matter is that this Napolitano idiot is handing over Arizona to Mexico. How, exactly, did she get elected?

Combine that with the Motor-Voter law and we have lots of new Democratic voters to nurse at the State and Federal teats.

The payoffs are great. Last year one Hispanic mayor in New Mexico mayor allowed welfare benefits for illegals. A group of Hispanic surnamed city councilmen near Tucson voted $25,000 of taxpayer money to be used for water tanks in the desert as a "humanitarian measure". I wrote them and asked how much of their own money went towards this noble cause - no answer.

Politicians of both parties are insulated from this insanity - they are guaranteed taxpayer-funded pensions, so it doesn't matter if this country's economy tanks because of their destructive policies.

Check out http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4047 for the latest outrage. At what point do the citizens lock and load?
