the other day while at the range with a friend we had a problem with my Garand where occasionally after firing the trigger guard would 'unlock' (like you would do to field strip the rifle) for lack of a better term. I watched my friend fire and noticed it seemed to happen if he jerked the trigger (or if i did). Is this normal or should i get this looked at by some one more knowledgeable than me?

its probably worn out & not locking down properly. you will need to see if its the stock thats worn or the trigger group. the stock can be shimmed to tighten it back up.

If it's got the stamped steel triggerguard all you need to do is bend it forward a little bit. The guard locks onto the trigger housing by just snapping over the edge of the frame.

If it has the forged/milled guard it's a little more complicated but probably easiest to just change to a stamped one. They interchange.

If for any reason you don't want to lose the milled guard then the snap in can sometimes be helped by peening right on the edge of the housing where the guard locks in. That would be on the oder of a temporary fix, but it could last for years.

Oh, and quit jerking the trigger :)

If your Garand is in a new stock, check the angled cuts in the magazine well. If they are being battered by the corresponding surfaces of the trigger housing, the cuts need to be relieved. I saw this happening on a gun with a new Boyd stock and relieving that area of the stock fixed the problem. The Trigger assembly was being clamped between that sloping surface and the guard lugs instead of the top of the stock.
If this is happening on a gun that has previously been shot without incident, this is unlikely to be your problem. HTH
