Is there anything specific I should know about these as far as maintenance, calibration, etc.?

I had a problem with the extractor. Keep it clean. I bought mine used and it was pretty dirty in the chamber and failed to extract. The extractor had to be replaced.

Run them wet. You should see lube seeping from the pins around the trigger area.

Here is a link to an excellent article involving AR upkeep: http://www.ar15.com/content/swat/keepitrunning.pdf

Might consider a good book on 'em, 'specially since you're new to the platform. I picked up John Sweeney's The AR-15 (first volume) after thumbing through one at a bookstore and reading the reviews at Amazon.

Note most reviews are for Vol.2/2nd edition-most folks are dissappointed with the 2nd, preferring the 1st.
I'm 'bout half way through it and it has some of the best, practical info I've seen (Sweeney's a gunsmith). Looks like I'll have to take a chance on Vol. 2 even though it doesn't seem to get a high rating.

If you have a Barnes & Noble in your area, that's where I got my hands on one to thumb through and check out.
