Hello all! I've never really hunted before and I didn't grow up in a hunting community so I'm extremely limited as far as hunting knowledge goes. I'd like to get into squirrel hunting but I don't know much about it. Is there a Squirrel season? Do I need a license? What calibers are allowed. Where is a good place to do it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I live in the Atlanta area. I'd like to stay as close as possible but I wouldn't mind driving out a few hours and spending a couple days hunting.

I live in Dahlonega, you may have heard of it probably not. You need a few things, 1. A DNR hunting regulations book which is free at walmart and most places that sell a license. It will tell when you can hunt on public land for squirrels and the season dates of all game for the year including squirrels. The season is in right now.
2. You need a hunting license. I have every stamp they sell because I hunt and fish as much as possible, but on my license it says the hunting and fishing combo is only $17 so only hunting should be cheaper. You need a georgia driver's license to get one of these unless your of a certain age and then you have to take a hunter safety course. Im not sure of the age but the regulation book will tell you.
3. You need a 22lr or a 12 gauge and somewhere to go!

Im going tomorrow while I scout for deer. Good luck!

If you were born on or after Jan.1, 1961; you're going to need to take a hunter education course.

Contact Ga. DNR at www.gohuntgeorgia.com There are several options for completing this neccessary requirement. (You MUST have the certificate before you can purchase a hunting license.

Squirrel season is: August 15-Feb.28. Limit is 12 per day.

There are a LOT of good wildlife management areas within short driving distancve of Atlanta. Also, a LOT of National Forrest areas in N.GA that are open for public hunting.

Welcome to the fraternity !

How can I find out where they are?

Get one of the DeLorme "Gazetter"s at Walmart. Also, the Ga.Hunting regulations have maps and descriptions of where the WMA's are at(also available at Wally's). For maps of the National Forrests, look in the phone book for one of the National Forrest Rangers office. The only one I'm familiar with is the one in Clayton, Ga. on US 441. I got most of my maps there.

Or, you can just drive north. You can't get to Tennessee without running into/through the Chattahoochee National Forrest. ....... Or much into Alabama w/o running through the Talladega National forrest.

Just beware that much of the National Forrests are co-located with State WMA's and they have specific seasons, regulations, ect.

If you pm me the city you live in Ill be glad to locate one for you. Like goose said there are plenty of wmas here in north georgia. I dont own any land as of yet and I hunt and fish all year on national forest or wma. The only thing about wmas is that they are picky so you really need to know the regs on hunting there. Where I like to hunt is national forest on one side of the road and wma on the other. Right now I can only hunt on one side.

Also recently the state put most of the wma maps online free to download.
