I have 2 barrels for my Remington Sportsman 58, one is full choke, and the other is modified. I want to have one of the barrels shortened to 19" for home defense (2 3/4" #00), but I want to continue to use the gun for upland bird hunting, pheasants, Quail, etc. Which barrel should I leave alone, and which one should I shorten. I got the gun when my father passed away, and have not yet had the opportunity to shoot it.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

gawilson45

You might want to post this in the Shotgun forum, rather than Tech Support. :)

Modified is more versatile, but your local conditions may mandate Full.

You mention ringnecks. Which barrel do you use then?

BTW, 870 barrels, of which there are many, can be modified to use on a 58 by drilling a gas port. A 20" Remchoked barrel thus drilled by a competent smith would make a great HD tool.

Action shooter,

A Remington 870 bbl will fit the mod 58.
All you have to do is drill the 2 gas holes in it.
I bought a 58 with a 28" mod bbl and took a 28" 870 bbl I had with vent rib and Rem-Chokes and drilled it to work on the 58.
You may just want to buy an 18" police bbl for an 870 and drill it to work.
Save the 2 mod 58 bbls, for personal reasons.

If you would rather cut one of your bbls, for sure cut the full choke bbl. Leave the mod alone, it's the best all around choke.
