Hi All;

I have an old Stevens "Favorite" Mdl. 27 rifle in 22LR cal. that I inherited from my Uncle. It has a 24" octagon barrel. It was made shortly after 1920 and has (SVG) stamped in the frame on the left side next to the barrel and has a "Y6XX" serial number. The barrel looks as good as new inside and out with a bright unblemished bore and the reciever looks just as good, no blemishes and no wear to speak of and shoots great. The Walnut stock and forend are unblemished but it looks to have been re-varnished some time or other and does not appear to be original and it is scaling off in places and I would like to re-finish it in the same manner as it came from the factory.

Does anyone know what kind of finish (if any) that it would have left the Stevens factory with? You can see it at the link below, it's the bottom rifle.

Good looking rifle!

I have three Stevens rifles, all with oil finished wood and no sign of varnish although one of them, a Schuetzen model has fine figured walnut that is finished like an old table - high gloss from much hand rubbing I'd bet.

I also have the 1911 catalog, and the "No. 11" catalog of indeterminate date (someone knows). Neither catalog makes note of a specific finishing process used on any of the rifles shown.

So.if it were mine I think I'd leave the rifle as it is at least until I could have it assessed.

BTW, the new price on your rifle was probably $8.50. I'm guessing because I don't know the exact model or configuration but I'm pretty sure that it's a good guess.

As it's now used, and since you seem to have gouged or marked the stock quite badly, I'll make you an offer of $6.00 for your rifle, which offer I'm sure you'll agree is quite a generous one.
