The Saiga, of course.

You'll get the most out of your money with it.

Norinco. I couldn't be happier with my Norinco 84s. My second choice would be a Saiga, you just can't go wrong with them.

Saiga, I want have anything to do with anything related to IO.

A converted saiga is the best value with out a doubt.

You forgot to put the best "AK" as a choice: The Robinson XCR. :)

I have one of the STG-2003's in .223, from IO, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Its better finished than any WASR Ive seen, closer in appearance to the Saiga than a WASR. The stock is long and comfortable, and it works great with Weiger mags. Only downside is the front handguard, its a little wiggly, but no worse than some old M16 foregrips Ive felt, and it can also be swapped out in the same fashion that a Saiga front handguard is replaced. Theyre pretty cheap too, or mine was at least. $425 just days before the election.

I love my Saiga chambered in x39. I don't think it even needs converted, it's fine the way it is.

Its just a over hyped Daewoo, not that there is anything wrong with that. :)

for collecting: Valmet or Galil, if it's an actual Galil

for practicality: Saiga

Are the VEPR and Siaga one in the same?

Are the VEPR and Siaga one in the same? Today, Izhmash owns the Molot factory where the VEPRs were made.

Today, the Saiga-M is the current Molot rifle (pretty much the same as the VEPR).

I voted Saiga and convert since you specified as a shooter, I think this is the best value.

But you are covering a 5X+ spread in price in your list.

As a collectible, I agree the Valmet or IMI Galil would be the one to get, but Galil mags are problematic unless you already have them as what you can find now is either expensive or in not very good shape, if not both.

Valmet mags could be a problem too if they don't use the standard AK mags, I'm not very familiar with the Valmet.

I've a milled Arsenal and I fail to understand why folks insist they are "better". They are heavier, that's about it.

As told on the History Channel's "Tales Of The Gun" The AK originally was designed for a stamped receiver, but the Soviet production methods of the time were not up to it, so they came up with the milled receiver as something they could actually produce. But as they show said, starting with an 8 lb block to end up with a 2 lb receiver was horribly inefficient, even for the Soviet standards of the day. They switch to stamped as soon as the production methods were figured out.

If you have a source for a Valmet in the condition you described and can afford it, run, don't walk, and hook yourself up. Now. Go.

Otherwise, the Saiga conversion is economically feasible, far more common, and represents a very good option for the money in terms of overall quality.

If you don't mind the weight, a Galil would be a good choice too, but I would personally avoid the Century built ones, which makes this option about as rare and expensive as the Valmet.

The chinese guns are "rated highly" because they're legends (you can't get them any more) imho.

Did Mitchell arms ever import a .223 AK? I know they imported 7.62x39, .308 and 8mm AK's.
