waiting on a ccw permit

So it is now week five since I went through the process to get a concealed carry permit through El Paso County in Colorado.

I am failing to understand why it takes such a long time. I know they have to send out the finger print check to CBI and wait for a response, and the Sheriffs department does their own check(?), but why on earth does it take so long?

As a side question, how much more comprehensive is a ccw back ground check compared to say, getting pulled over and having a police officer run your drivers license?

I ask this because if the police officer can find your criminal history in a few minutes in a traffic stop, why does it take so long to get your permit?

If you cannot already tell I am getting pretty antsy.

well, part of the system is probably to keep you waiting in case you have any particular intention behind getting your CCW other than self defense. other than that I cannot imagine why it should take so long. it takes a gun salesmen 20 minutes top to run a background check and give you the gun. I am still waiting for my CCW too, I feel your pain.

Tomorrow will mark the first anniversary of my receiving my CHL in the mail. I guess I was one of the fortunate ones here in Texas. It took 93 days for me to receive it after I sent in the application.

One of my good friends applied for one, sending in his papers the first week of (last) June. As the weeks and months dragged by, I would ask him whether he had received his CHL yet. "No, not yet." I saw him yesterday and learned that he had finally gotten it just a couple of days before. Mercy, that's SIX months! Yikes! :uhoh:

I am failing to understand why it takes such a long time.

Terry Maketa is very pro 2nd amendment, he is not deliberately jerking your chain. El Paso county has more CHP holders than any other county in Colorado so I expect they are swamped down at the Sheriff's office.

As a consolation, Colorado does not require a permit to conceal in your vehicle. and you can open carry every place but the SSR Denver ( Well the M.Ps might get a little bent if you try it on Carson)

I have heard that Sheriff Maketa is very pro gun and I know that they are doing what the law requires of them to issue a permit. With the large volume of permits they issue I can imagine that it would be easy to get backed up.

I used my AZ permit until it expired and so now I am in that limbo stage in between permits.

Yes, as a consolation Colorado law is very good about the carrying of a handgun outside one's home, I just miss having the permit.
