I REALLY REALLY REALLY want one of these. I saw on in .30-06 in a store a couple years ago; it was new production, I believe part of a limited run, but I couldn't afford it and it's long gone.

I recall seeing basic rack grade variants in .270, but not original .30-06, for some odd reason. I've seen (on the 'net) lavishly engraved versions, but I just want a plane field grade version. I want a new production (so it's a shooter, not a collector, and can handle modern ammo) in .30-06, preferably with a tang mounted sight.

Are they available?

(What would REALLY be neat would be a repro of the ones made for the Imperial Russian government, in 7.62x54mmR, that could be fed from stripper clips.)

I am with you Nightcrawler, I have wanted one for several years now.

I keep hoping that with all of the surplus arms coming out of Russia now that they will find the warehouse with the Russian ones in it and reimport them at a reasonable price. My understanding is that the vast majority of these were made on that Russian contract.

Get the .270! I did and don't regret it.The difference in the less recoil makes the hard butt liveable(and a recoil pad is unthinkable).;)

Nightcrawler, the Model 1895 was last reissued by Winchester from 1995-2002 chambering the Grade 1 version in .270 Win. (1997-1999), .30-06 Springfield (1998-1999) or .405 Win (2000-2002). There was also a 1895 Limited Edition chambered in .30-06 from 1995-1997 (4000 mfg.) and a 1895 High Grade chambered in .30-06 from 1995-1999 or .405 Win. from 2000-2002 (4000 mfg.). You'll new to start looking at gun shows or websites like Gunbroker (http://www.gunbroker.com), GunsAmerica (http://www.gunsamerica.com) or Auction Arms (http://www.auctionarms.com). Hope this helps!

i would love to get one of the 7.62X54R Russian ones but i read that not too many survived the Russian Civil War
then again, there has got to be some left since those Russkies save EVERYTHING

I have a 7mm mauser 95 Win. , a relative got it from Sam Peckenpaw (sp?). While I don't think it is factory, it was made to look factory way back. This gun was obtained by Peckenpaw while filming movies in Mexico. It is about 60-70% but is a good shooter with no case stretching.

I also want a plain-Jane in .30-06, SO I CAN SHOOT IT! I blundered into a high grade version a couple of years ago - - A pal needed some money badly so I got it. It is just too nice to shoot, though, and it's a safe queen now.

Guess I ought to get off my duff and list it on an auction site.

Best,
Johnny
