hammer won't move

Earlier this year I bought a new Colt signature series Pocket Police. I've only shot it a few times. Today when I was cleaning it and had the barrel and cylinder off, I also took off the stock (for the first time). I squeezed the trigger and cocked the hammer back all the way. The hammer easily went back farther than it normally does and now its stuck and won't move. I did not force anything. Is this normal?

If this is normal, where can I find instructions on how to disassemble and get it working again?
If this is not normal, will Colt fix it for free?

look in black powder essentials. I believe we have something there on taking it apart. its not hard the gun only has 30 pieces. basicly in a nut shell the grips take them off then the back strap and main spring. then the 3 screws on the bottom for the trigger guard. then you may be able to see if you have something stuck in there or will be able to see if something is broken.

Normally the backstrap keeps the hammer from rotating too far, but since you had removed the stocks and backstrap and cocked the hamer it is now stuck.

Notice that the mainspring is held at the botom of the trigger guard by a screw. Loosen and remove that screw and then the mainspring.

The hand is now sticking out of the breechface (with the cylinder off). Push it back slightly, and then see if you can lower the hammer. You may have to wiggle things a bit. If/when you get the hammer down, replace the mainspring and screw is reverse order. Thereafter do not cock the hammer past half-cock when the backstrap is not in place.

If this doesn't work you will have to pull the whole action down. Be sure you have the right size screwdrivers to do this! Otherwise things will get worse.

I suspect the mainspring is hanging up the hammer. Removing the mainspring (hammer spring) as Fuff says should solve the problem. But take care as the spring is under tension so hold onto it when you remove the big screw that holds it in place.

That makes sense about the mainspring hanging up the hammer, and I shouldn't pull the hammer that far back.

I got out my Brownells screwdriver set and took it all apart following the instructions in black powder essentials. I don't see anything wrong except: there is a small wheel mounted in the hammer and I think the mainspring pushes against it. That wheel does not turn. I put some oil on it and can only turn it a tiny bit (1/32") grabbing it with a pliers. There is no corrosion so I assume that either its not supposed to turn; or it came from the factory with the metal pressed too tight on either side of it, in which case I don't know what to do about it.

if there is nothing wrong with the main spring. on the back. Then the next thing you will have to do is take the main spring back off. remove the 3 screws on the bottom of the trigger guard. then there is a screw on the bottom. a larger flat bladed. Unscrew it and remove the then you might as well clean out the insides. there are 3 pieces that may cause a hang up. the sear and bolt spring, the trigger itself and the hand spring. All in all it may take you a few minutes to figure out but its not hard. my guess is that screw is loose. because if it is thats the problem.

Thanks guys for your help. All the screws were tight when I took it apart. I put it all back together and now it works fine. This was a good learning experience for me. Disassembling it and putting it back together was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be, and I'm no longer afraid to take it apart.

trickshot you should spend some time over the weekend taking it apart and getting familiar iwith it. Once you do that its like no problem when you have prablems you can almost find out whats wrong with it on your own.

Trickshot, Colts and Remmies are basically the same. Ive never had to take down my Ruger or Rogers and Spencer.
