How many of your guns are new/used

September 21, 2003, 05:33 PM
I'm just wondering about how often THR members purchase a gun new vs. a used one.

One of my guns I bought new, the other used.

About 50-50. A lot of the guns I like can only be found used.

All have been new. I just haven't found any used gun that I felt was worth the asking price. At least not when I had to cash to buy.

Most of mine have been new or gifts. Only bought one used gun from a friend.

Most of the guns I want are no longer available new, or have been corrupted with afterthought saftys, and locks. So I buy used most of the time.

Its very, very rare for me to buy a new gun. They lose so much value once you walk out the door that I long ago started buying just used.

September 21, 2003, 06:17 PM
About 30/70 thanks to my C&R license.

Very few of my guns are new although a few were unfired when I got them. I would prefer to find a used gun rather than a new one in most cases. Since most guns, particularly handguns, will have an average lifespan far longer than most of us, buying used simply makes good sense. In addition, so many of the guns I want haven't been made in twenty to fifty years so buying used is almost a necessity.

Of my current collection:

23% used
77% new

Out of 45 guns 2 were new. I work for a service company and have as one of my customers a major pawn shop chain and several small shops. They give me good deals on average $50 to $100 less than I've seen posted in the forums. Sometimes they even call me before they take something into see if I'm interested. And give me extra lay a way time if I need it
Also as was said earlier as soon as a new gun leaves a shop it's not new anymore. I've seen alot of used guns in the shops that look like they've never been fired. I bought a Ruger MkI once 7 years after they were out of the catalog that still had the factory grease NIB for $100. I also bought a Almost NIB Norinco for $275. My used Randal 1911 was $400 I saw the exact same gun at the last show for $1100( he won't get it but it was still fun to see)

20% new
80% used

September 21, 2003, 07:10 PM
25% new
Many of the used guns I bought looked, felt, and smelled new.

Saving 25% to 40% over a NIB for just lacking a box and warranty card
is worth it.

I don't have a gun shopping list so it is nice to pick up a new one as they are discovered.

How should C&Rs be counted? I've only bought my C&Rs from distributors' newly imported stock, so I'm thinking they'd count as new (but I'm not going to count them for this thread).

I had one used gun (Ruger MkII Government), bought it solely because of MD's integral lock law, but that had issues so Ruger replaced it with a new pistol. Now I'm back to 100% new, from 90% for my modern firearms.

About 3 to 1, new to used.

I say about because some of them are hard to figure. For instance, I have a Ruger Police Service Six that I bought new in '85, but later sold to my father, but later bought back. New or used?

September 21, 2003, 07:54 PM
Three new pistols, one used, one new shotgun and three well used rifles.

September 21, 2003, 07:57 PM
Nearly all used.

It's about half and half, but the proportion of used to new is rising: nobody seems to be making high quality target guns any more.

September 21, 2003, 09:32 PM
I'm almost 50/50 :D Lately tho, I'm preferring used so I can afford MORE guhnzzz :D

September 21, 2003, 09:47 PM
Most of my revolvers are used. Most of my autos are new. No real reason for that- I prefer my revolvers used when I can and so far it has just so happened that most of what I wanted in automatic pistols has been new, but that will likely change in the near future as fewer new guns are available in MD and more of what I am looking for right now will be easier to find used. Rifles are mostly new, and between some that I want and will probably get new and some that I want that I can only get (or most likely will only be able to afford) used I have no idea what will happen to this proportion.

September 21, 2003, 09:56 PM
I have had some ''used'' which were all but NIB . maybe the best deal going cos good gun but below new price.

Most of mine are ''used'' by definition ..... but as for percentage .... hmmm ..... I guess new to used ratio is around ........ 1:5

September 21, 2003, 10:13 PM
aint bought a new gun yet, and most likely won't. if i was to buy a gun, it would be face to face and local (state) , and since my tastes are pretty average, i havent had any trouble finding something i wanted yet, outside of single action revolvers.

September 21, 2003, 10:17 PM
I have only bought one used gun, a mil surp L1A1. I own other used guns but they were inherited or given to me. If I'm buying it it'll probably be new.

September 21, 2003, 10:26 PM
Out of all the guns I currently own, only three were purchased new.

September 21, 2003, 10:31 PM
Out of all the guns I currently own, only three were purchased new. I'm wanting to do the math Tam ...... to get a percentage ......... perhaps 0.01% new??!!! .............. :D :D :D

Most are used, just like me.

September 21, 2003, 10:34 PM
A greater number of my guns are used because I buy a lot of MILSURP rifles and handguns and pre-ban ARs. About the only guns I buy new anymore are ones earmarked for HD or CCW.

September 22, 2003, 12:35 AM
My Ruger was used, but unfired condition- previous owner traded it in before he shot it.

My SA was NIB.

September 22, 2003, 01:31 AM
Both of my pistols were purchased new.

All of my long arms are used.

It just so happens to be that way at this very moment. Usually I purchase used firearms as most specimins lose very little (if nothing) after a few hundred rounds.

I will probably continue to buy used unless I must have a particular weapon and can't find one used.

September 22, 2003, 01:44 AM
About 10% were new,
Another 15% were like new,
The rest were just broken in.

September 22, 2003, 02:05 AM
I'm pretty sure I've used them all... even the new ones.

September 22, 2003, 06:45 AM
I'm right at 50/50 right now 'cause the 96/44 was new and 50% the normal price, so it was less than most used lever guns. I'll end up going more used once I find a good Marlin 30-30, I missed one at the show by a couple minutes.

If I had a C&R license, if would be much more used. But I haven't decided to put myself into more debt yet. Most of the time, the used stuff, unless it is really beat up, is just a tiny bit less than new, or my ratio would already be a lot more used items.

Used by a little old lady who only took it to the range on Sunday.

About 15% new/ 85% used. However that gap is widening most every time the BBT shows up in the driveway (a C&R is a big drain on the bank account  ).

September 22, 2003, 02:17 PM
33% New
43% Used
24% Gifts/Inherited

September 22, 2003, 02:25 PM
2 out of 4 were pre-owned but never shot.
