non steel-core 7.62x54R?

anyone know a good source for this? preferably online? I usually go to an indoor range, since all the outdoor ranges I know have rules that annoy me to no end (ie: one round in the gun at a time, can only fire once every three seconds, must fire through some over-wrought tunnel of wood, or combinations of the three), but they, understandably, don't allow steel-core ammo. they sell S&B SP ammunition, but they only have 180gr. in stock. I'd like to try my 91/30 out with something a little lighter, so I could get through more than 20 rounds without it feeling like my shoulder got hit by an over-enthusiastic sledgehammer weilding construction worker..
so, anyone know where I can get a good selection of lead-core ammunition? does it exist?

Most all 7.62x54R is lead core. Wolf, S&B, all American commercial ammunition and most surplus. Wolf uses steel in their jackets, but the core is dead-soft lead.
Try Cheaper Than Dirt and Sportsmans Guide online to see what they have. Ammoman should also sell the goods on the cheap.

well, I know that S&B is lead core, but the Winchester White box is steel core. they use surplus bullets in brass cases. I'm not sure about the Wolf, but my range doesn't allow steel cased ammo either. I'm not aware of any other commercial manufacturers of new ammo..
man, I need to just buy a bunch of acres up north or something. I just can't find a good range in southeast michigan..

That truly suprises me, especially since any bullet they load into their .308 and .30-06 rounds can work perfectly fine in a rifle chambered for 7.62x54R.
Seems it wouldn't be too cost efficient, does it.

I tell myself that all the time !

Up north? Like up here in the UP? Make sure you have a good backstop...even out in the boonies, almost all the land has been bought up and is full of hikers, bikes, ATVs, etc.
Can't shoot on our property...no backstop, close neighbors, and horses...

yeah, I was thinking of the UP. my brother lives up in Gogebic county (over by the WI border). seems there's still some land available that butts up to the Porcupine mountains. I'll have to check it out. Otto has been bugging me to be a yooper for years now. I may just make his wich come true.. :-P

I thought steel core ammo was illegal as it is "armor piercing". I was under the impression it was banned along wioth a number of other hard metals like tungsten. Can someone enlighten me?

Good news. After reading about the possibility of surplus steel-core bullets being used in Winchester whitebox ammunition, I had to call Winchester to verify, as it appeared extremely illogical for them to go this route (for reasons explained in my last post).
"Josh" in Winchester's ammunition technical department (1-800-356-2666) guaranteed me that all their 7.62x54R is lead core and always has been. He mentioned that he couldn't for the life of him figure why anyone would say otherwise. Seems some space cadet fed you bad info, limiting your ammunition selection as a result.
Boxer primed, brass cased and lead core, so have at it without worries!
Good luck (if you use them, be sure to include feedback).

If you're going to be a yooper, there are some things you need. So don't forget your flannel, your can of snuff, your swampers, your chook, your snow machine, and your beat up, half-rusted, jacked-up 4x4 pickup with the plow on the front end. :D

The Winchester 7.62X54R is made in eastern Europe ( S&B I think ) for Winchester. I bet it has a steel jacket. The steel used in the jackets is pretty soft, you may see if the range will let you use it.

argh. methinks I need to find a new range, or some state land with a decent backstop. if a magnet sticks to the ammo, they won't let me shoot it. period.

Mark Tyson - nope, not illegal (check you state laws, but not illegal at federal level, nor in my state). I've been turned down at the indoor range on several occasions for bringing in my wolf 7.62x39 with steel cores. Many military cartridges have readily available steel core ammo. Good for BGs wearing SBA or hiding behind thinnish cover. Dunno about tungsten, but I don't think it's illegal either. Most anything that you hear about "AP" ammo is over hyped by the media, perhaps giving you and others the impression that they were banned - for example, Black Talon pistol bullets (which were never AP to begin with) were never made illegal (IINM), although the fidiots tried to do so (federal idiots - lol - just made up new word) - it's just that after mass media hysteria over the supposed "cop-killer" bullets, the manufacturer voluntarily withdrew them from the civi market (and then just renamed them another name and started selling them again - the Ranger XTP or some such).
Nightcrawler, what's a chook? And hey, if you don't have a safe berm when shooting in the UP, then that is that many less unwelcome hikers and other tourons in the area, right?
Beretta, I feel doubly sorry for you. It's bad enough that they have stupid rules like one round in the gun at a time, but it's beyond absurdity if they can't distinguish as between whether the magnet is sticking to the BULLET or just the CASE.

Nightcrawler, what's a chook?
You don't know??? LOL
Geez...I've lived in the UP since I was six years old now...let's see if I can remember what you flatlanders call 'em...er...they're wool or synthetic caps. Watch caps, they're called sometimes. They keep your ears warm when it's cold.

This is a chook.
"Chook" is the Finlander word for 'em. Don't know where wered ear flaps, but most are basically like an Army-isit came from, but until recently, I wasn't aware that that's NOT what everybody called 'em.
You DO know what swampers are, don't you?? :p

well, nightcrawler, either you tell me what swampers are, or I call my brother and ask him. I know what a chromer is, but that's about the extent of my yooper-centric vocabulary. aside from the accent, anyway. my brother can switch back and forth, especially when he's calling for parts for da ford, donchaknow. ya, de guys at da parts store don't pay attention if'n ya sound like a troll, eh?:neener:
