CONTROLLING VIOLENCE, NOT GUNS
September 21, 2003 -- John Lott hit the nail on the head when he wrote that mainly law-abiding citizens, not criminals, will be obeying the City Council's proposed new "gun-control" laws ("NYC'S Latest Gun Misfires," Opinion, Sept. 16).
If Mayor Bloomberg and these politicians were really interested in protecting the public from violence with the use of guns, I'm certain they would have received widespread support from conservatives and liberals alike - if they worked together with Gov. Pataki and our Albany representatives in passing legislation that would mandate prison terms for anyone using a gun during the commission of a crime.

By Mayor Bloomberg's logic, we should be holding Pfizer and Eli Lilly accountable for prescription addictions.
Don't blame the gunmakers for the crimes of the gun users. They're just trying to eke out a living. Unlike the criminals who use guns, gunmakers are perfectly legal.
Daniel J. Rivera /Astoria
Virtually all gun violence in New York occurs with the use of illegal guns. However, this onerous proposed insurance requirement only penalizes legal gun owners, who have permits and registered firearms.
These individuals are not merely law-abiding citizens in the passive sense, but citizens who willingly go out of their way to follow what are already some of the most restrictive gun-control laws in the nation.
Are these the people we need to worry about?
