Any suggestions? I would prefer to be able to install it myself without a gunsmiths help. I plan on installing a red dot in the near future.

If the gun is not tapped for a rail already your options are limited. Jack Weigand makes a mount for the non tapped MKI. Installation requires removal of the rear sight from its dovetail and replacing it with a mount adapter then the rail mounts to that adapter dovetail piece. Not the best for a heavy red dot but it will work. Mine keep coming loose can't remember what I did with it after I drilled and tapped it for the rail. :D

B-Square makes one for bull barrels that, like the Wiegand, uses the rear sight dovetail. It is full length and uses the front sight screw hole as well.
They also make a clamp-on (http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/22pistol.htm) base that does not require removal of the rear sight.

AimTech (http://www.aimtech-mounts.com/SEMI-AUTOS.htm) makes a mount that replaces the right grip panel.

This is an MK II, but the same no gunsmith Weigand mount works on an MK I.

I have a B-Square on my MarkII but it willfit the MI also.

It uses the dovetail for the rear sight and slides over the front of the receiver and tightens with a small set screw.

Nice design and rather compact for a no drill and tap. It stays tight under all conditions and allows enough ring spacing for most regular pistol scopes.

It requires that you remove the target style rear sight or drift out the fixed.

Not a bad option to drill and tap.
