In market for an update wtih my slug gun. I'm looking for the most accuracy I can find in either a pump or semi. I've been looking at Benelli, H&R semi-auto, beretta. I appreciate any experienced suggestions with any.......

I have a Mossberg 500 A Tactical that I use a new type of slug in. It's a jacketed sabot slug (Remington Premier Copper Solid Magnum). It looks like the company put some effort into this round for a change instead of it being a standard lead slug that we are so used to seeing. Shoots very true and very effective. Check em' out.... Very nice.

Right now my tool is a mossy 500,,,,with hornady it holds about 3-4 in. at 200 yrds. .........the gun is inconsistent though, i need to find a "all the time dependable, accurate, tough slug gun.

Question from a newbie (me): Would a sabot slug in a rifled barrel produce greater accuracy than a rifled slug + smooth barrel? Or are both about the same?
I'm curious about Muley's question as well, as to what slug shotgun setup provides high accuracy.

Ashen,
Either choice being considered....the rifled barrel is a better choice, THEN round. The nature of smooth bores leaves it so there is often just enough "play" left that the slug will still essentially be "rattling around" inside as it makes the journey (even at a very small level) lending to erratic behavior and inconsistent grouping. Of course the back pressure will help some to keep it true, but a rifled barrel is designed so that when it all comes into play, the slug will acutally epand a bit and seat itself a bit on the lands/grooves as it travels, thus creating somewhat of a seal that starts the spinning action. It's that spinning action from the rifling that keeps the shot true, kind of like throwing a football. It can go every which way but when you add that good spin it flies very true. Same concept. I don't thing plain rifled slugs in a smooth barrel would produce nearly the same effect. IMO.
Think of old muzzle load muskets of yore.....that is why that had such terrible accuracy REGARDLESS OF THE ROUND until the advancement of the round and the rifling caught up with the times.

Dang.
Two inches from point of aim, at two hundred yards...That ain't awful by any standard.
I admire your persistence and ability.
How in the world do you get sight alignment that fine from two stacked beads?:

Hey Salty,,,
I forgot to say that I have scope on the mossy to get that at 200yrds. The only type of 'irons' I like to shoot withh are the milspec peep sights.
The main thing I'm looking for, is a semi or a pump that I can pic up and shoot under 2 moa @100yrds. with good ammo every time, any still be built like an abrams tank. I know there has got to be one with that or at least a happy median.

shoot under 2 moa @100yrds.
rifled barreled shotguns and slugs are a new subject to me. Are you serious? 2 moa? A lot (most?) rifles aren't that accurate.

It's hard to get past the price of those rifled slugs though. They certainly aren't cheap. Do you mean Sabots? Rifled slugs at cabelas and wal mart here are like 2 bucks for a box of 5 which is cheaper than my 308 ammo...

My slug gun is an H&R 20 gauge with a 24" heavy rifled barrel that will shoot 3 shots in a 1.25 group laterally at 100 yards. They share about 1/4 of the same hole, at 150 yards it groups slightly under 2" and 150 yards is what I consider the max range of a shotgun slug.

For my home defense shotgun I am using a Remington 870 20 inch with rifle sights, smooth bore, Remington 2 3/4 inch slugs. At 50 yards offhand I can keep the slugs in a two inch circle for five shot groups.
