View Full Version : I knew I'd be seriously hooked !

I took my $149 WalMart Mossberg mod 88 skeet and trap shooting for the first time. That goes for me AND my shotgun. That last time I ever fired a shotgun was age 12 (I'm 57). It took me about 5 shots to bust my first pigeon and hook me for life.
I put about 100 rounds through it and had some serious fun. I played a game called "Five-station" and did fairly well, as long as I remembered to pump the action on two-shot combos.
I learned that the quicker you shoot your target in trap the better chance of busting them. Once they get downrange and begin to drop, forget it.
My friends and I did all this at a 4-H sponsored site and it only cost $10.
Where else can you go shooting and have that much fun for so little?
Some things I have to improve:
Keeping both eyes open; following through on shots; get quicker at target acquisition and presentation. This from a guy who loves to shoot any kind of firearm.
My Mossy looked out of place but it performed very well with no malfunctions, considering my inexperience. :D

EXCELLENT!!!!! Glad to have new shotgunners in the fold! Now your job is to find someone that has not been and take THEM for the first time........

Oh yeah. It is the most fun per dollar in the world of guns. The Mrs. is taking me to a Sporting Clay course for my birthday. Can't wait.
We even shoot on vacation if we can find a club.
I don't recall what I did with my weekends before we started shotgunning....Oh wait a second, cut the grass. Oh well the snakes and lions need a place to live too.
Have fun (like I needed to add that!)

Thanks for making my morning. I love to hear about new shotgunners.
Punch 101 into the search engine and see the threads I started for beginning shotgunners.
And have fun. Shooting clays is as much fun as I can have fully dressed.

I know it's trivial for some but I just HAD to share that.
I'll have to do some searches for the best techniques, barrel lengths, and chokes. Good grief, I don't even know how to clean this thing!
What a versatile firearm and what a vital skill this is.
My 28 year old son is next to be introduced; He's like me in that he'll shoot ANY firearm for enjoyment.
Thanks again!

Sure ... for NOW, you think it's trivial. Welcome to the cult. :neener: :D I've been a nonexpert-but-hooked-for-life shotgunner since I was young. It gets into your blood.
Somebody around here once described a golf course as "a terrible waste of a perfectly good sporting clays range." Makes sense to me.

Hey there and welcome to shotgun shooting. It can be loads of fun ... but one thing on your post made it seem alot more fun ... $10 for all day.
Where was this .... is it in the Atglanta area, where I live also? Can anyone go? Please tell me ... most other place around here cost me $25 or more dollars for 4 or 5 rds of trap.

Hello Axeman:
It is a simple and primitive down-sloping field that is run by 4H club volunteers. It is open to the public only on every 3rd Saturday of the month and the rest of the Saturdays are reserved for 4H members.
It is located in Fayette County off of highway 85, which runs south out of Fayetteville. It is between Highway 74 on the south and Bernhard road on the north. The entrance is on the west side of highway 85 and if you don't know when it is coming up, you'll cruise right by it. The 4H club puts up a little sign but the entrance is pretty obscure.
My other suggestion is to contact the 4H chapter operating in Fayette County. It is unsophisticated and not fancy but safely run by 4H volunteers who will be glad to assist you with any coaching or tips.
Good Luck......
