I think I read somewhere that the front sight of the M44 and M38 is taller than the front sight used on the 91/30. My 91/30 groups about a foot high, so a taller front sight is indicated. Anyone have specific info? I realize I could probably knock out the front sight post and make my own, but that is not desireable if there are other options.

I've had good luck with Mojo's aperture sights. They're not too expensive--less than a scope mount. And they don't permanently alter the rifle.

The down side is you have to pick your zero--no more tangent rear sight.

Another alternative is to buy some spare front sights from TAPCO or elsewhere and alter one of these, or pick one with a higher front post.

The Finns solved the problem by replacing the front sight on captured 91/30's. They used little dovetailed spacers.

I can't speak for the M38, but all of my M44's are the same height as my M91\30's. One solution is to get one of those hollow metal pins that are split down the side (some one out there has to know what these are called) and slide it over the original pin. Then just file it down to where you need it. I've been meaning to do this on a few of mine, but it just keeps getting moved down the list.

related to the mn 91/30, has anyone been able to drift the front sight to adjust for windage? bugger doesn't want to budge.

Yeah, don't know why I couldn't remember that. I've got nothing to do today, so I think I'm going to grab a handful from Ace hardware. It's a cheap project.

As far as drifting the front sight, I've never had to do that, I cheat and just bend the pin a little. But I did have to put a new one on a Ufixem once, and it was a chore. IIRC, you can only get them to go in from the left, or maybe the right. I'm just almost helpful.:D

I've made many new front sight pins for Mosins. Drive out the front sight.
With the proper size punch, hit the top of the pin through the hole in the top of the sight hood and that will knock the existing pin out. The new pin is made from a #6 box nail. Cut the head off then put the nail in an electric drill. Take a file and reduce the diameter just a bit until it is a snug fit in the pin hole. Drive it in and file it flush with the bottom of the dovetail. The nail takes cold blue great. I make mine so they come up about 3/4 of the distance inside the hood. Take a file to the range, shoot and file until the rifle is sighted in exactly where you want it. You will see how it goes when you get into it. Mosins are much more fun when they shoot where you point them

My 91/30 is a Finn capture and it looks like it has a Mauser sight blade?:confused: Any thoughts or opinions as I am really :confused:
