Hi, I am looking for a way to make spreader loads. I have my grandfathers 12 gauge full choke model 12. Just a bit too tight for my use as an upland gun. I will not alter the choke or barrel in any way. I have read about spreader loads, any one have source of components for such? Thanks,

Check out >Ballistic Products<, (http://www.ballisticproducts.com/products.asp?dept=122) they have specialty wads for spreader loads.

I made up some many, many years ago to help me improve my odds against Keystone state Grouse, but can't recall if I ever patterned them to see if they actually worked?
I used 1 1/8 oz of damn near pure lead 7 1/2 shot backed by a 3 1/2 DE charge of Unique, with an "X" insert placed in the shotcup made with old playing cards. It was hoped the very soft shot driven very hard would deform a lot at firing, and the card stock X would act as a spreader. Could have even cut off the wad petals to help further deform the shot. I remember reading that cubic shaped shot was used in spreader loads in order to help the shot disperse more rapidly than round.

mothernatureson--I've used the Disperser X wad from Ballistic products and have patterned them. Out of a full choke gun you should get in the neighborhood of Imp Cyl to Mod. depending on your particular gun. They can be somewhat of a challenge to load in tapered cases (win AA, Rem STS) because of the center post and the wad ram on your press. I loaded them in Federal straight wall hulls and could set them using my finger onto the powder and did not use the ram on my press. MEC does make a shot drop tube for their Grabber and 9000 G that will work with the Disperser X if you choose to go that route. Hope this helps.

I made some years ago by cutting my own "X" from heavy cards stock. I did pattern them & they did open up my pattern.
I cut a rectangle the width = to the diameter of the inside of the wad in a hull. Length was a bit shorter than the end of wad. 2 per shell. cut a slit in each one half way down and put them together to form an X.
It was 20+ years ago so that is the best I can remember.

yes, that is what I was looking for. Thanks to all who responded. My wife is a crafter and has plenty of card stock. Will try this. Thanks very much!
