A new guy question; When Iím at the range and using the benchrest for possible sight adjustments, at what range should I place the target? And/or, what other factors do I need to consider when firing for sight adjustments?

Thanks in advance.

Use the rest for your hands/arms, not the gun; if the gun touches the rest, it will likely change the point of impact and render the sight adjustment off for your normal off-hand shooting.

Adjust the sights out to 25 yards if you have that option; the farther out you go (without going so far the trajectory begins to be a factor) the more precise your adjustments can be. If you're zeroed for 25 yards, you'll be close as need be for anything nearer than that.

All this assumes you're shooting a standard, defense-oriented handgun, rather than a specialty gun for long-range silhouette or something. Obviously, that changes the rules.

What sort of gun is this? With any new hand gun I come by, I like to test them up really close to a target at about 10 or 15 feet. i don't go to any range so there is no one but me and the woods, so no rules.

I sit on the ground, and use a brief case as a brace to rest my wrists and I use both of them and both eyes. I like 2 foot by 2 foot targets in one inch squares.. I set the sites dead center on some kinds of guns right at the X, and on others I set the sites at 6:00 under the X, but it depends on the gun and what job it is supposed to do.

You might be surprised at gun that won't hit anywhere near the X, at this short distance. Some guns won't group anywhere near center target either, and depending on what the result is, then if I can adjust sites I do for windage first and elevation last..

Then I work at 15 yards or 25 yards again depending on what the gun is for.

OT: I saw your town in 05, at the train depot.. Nice place..
