i bought a box of 150 grain fmjbt .308" bullets to shoot through my 300 mag, for target shooting. i thought i might try to play around with the accuracy game a little, since i have not done that in a LONG time. i just smoked a case / bullet to see how long the oal needed to be to touch the lands. it turns out that with the bullet just touching the lands, there is aprox. 0.100" of the bullet contacting the mouth of the case. now, keeping the bullet 0.020" off the lands, still only gives me 0.120" engagement on the bullet. i realize that with this tiny bit, they would have to be single feed hand fed. but is .120
' enough? am i going to have to find a longer bullet to play this game with?

The "general rule of themb" for minimum seating depth is one caliber. So at least a tad deeper tahn 0.3", if your case is at max trim length.

Most FMJBT won't shoot worth sour apples anyway, unless it happens to be Lapua or something.

Off the shelf GI grade FMJBT is doing good to shoot 2 MOA most of the time.

really, that suprises me. really, what other purpose is there for a fmjbt other than target shooting? other than shooting through a car engine. lol. assuming of course i am not military shooting people.

Are you counting the boattail in your .1 measurement or just the bearing surface?

Just plain shooting for kicks and giggles.

If your bullets are sufficently tight to allow normal handling without fear of falling out you will do fine with that seating depth.

I do question the value of shooting 150s from a magnum for accuracy, they would be better suited to a .308 I believe. Suspect you will do better with pills of 170+ grains. Some of the Sierra Match HPs come to mind.

Yeah, 175gr match or 180gr match for good accurate range work.

But if it's just blasting away and having fun on the range, no sense in using pricing match stuff for that.

I know some guys who use them on game, to minimize pelt/meat damage, but shots need to be more precise (mostly taken with headshots), so bulk milsurp FMJ's aren't the best for that use.

no. that measurement is how much of the bullet surface is actually contacting the neck surface. i got these bullets CHEAP ($12.00/100) i think i wish i had bought more. but if they are not going to be accurate. then there is no point (no pun).
