ARFatboy,

I like to use grease on the high stress areas where the bolt runs in the receiver, my favorite is Lubri-plate. I put it on with a small artist paint brush and burnish it with my finger tip to remove the excess, or if you can't reach the area with your finger tip use a q-tip.

Cold weather, low temps require that you take it easy on the grease it can slow down the action if used to excess.

thanks. i thought that it might need something a little heavier than oil. i wonder if white lube would be ok? and where do you get the lubri-plate?

ARFB,
The tube of Lubri-Plate in my ammo box is so old I can't even remember where I bought it.

Try www.lubriplate.co see if they can find a retail outlet near you.

I couldn't tell you about the "white" lube, is it the aerosol type? If yes that is usually lithium, and I don't know if it will provide the same lubrication as Lubri-Plate.
I do know that I use lithium for lubing high stress areas in automotive applications, and that it does semi dry.
So it may be of use in firearms.
You may be onto something new!

Looks like another good time to point out the good, common sense information here about lubrication:

I use a product called Dri-Slide for just about everything except the slide rails. This lube contains a lot of Mollbdenum Disulfide (Molly) and is a dry lube. It goes on wet so it gets into the areas where it needs to be and then the "wet" evaporates leaving the molly lube. It's pretty messy when it's wet but it's fine when it's dry. I apply it hot. For the slide rails, I use Mil Spec-1 grease and I apply that hot too. No I don't own stock in the companies...I just like their products!

On a side note: On my personal firearms, I like to apply the lubricants to hot metal. Metal surfaces are not smooth when you look at them under a microscope. Slide rails look like a WWI battlefield with craters, gouges, etc. Applying the lubricant to hot metal helps to get better penetration down into those imperfections. Keep yer powder dry, Mac.
