I saw the "Ballistic Buffalo" segment in a Field and Stream magazine where you bind newspaper to stop your rifle bullets to see how they expand and stuff. How much newspaper do I need to stop a .22 solid point?

i use cabela's catalogs. about 4 inches of penetration is normal. i move point of impact about every 5 rounds on an eight inch thick stack.

Out of a pistol i usually get about 3" with solid copper plated slugs, about 1.5" with lead hollow points. Rifle, add a inch for the solids and another 1.5 for the lead.

Anyone know what you would get with .22 mag, rifle and pistol, hollow point and solid?

It will take way more to stop it with wet paper then stop it dry paper.
If you use wet newspaper, you will need about a foot to be completely safe from ever shooting through it.
Then after a few shots, it will get all torn up and still not stop all of them.

absolutely rcmodel, but the op stated he wanted to test expansion.. a wet tareget will proved better results via less fragmentation.

You are abolutely correct.
Bullets won't usually expand in dry paper.
I just wanted to make sure the folks who were saying 1 1/2" - 3" were not leading him down the path to shooting a hole in his garage wall when he used wet phonebooks! :D :D
