Ground squirrel...Life or Death!

I live in a "tract" on homes on 1 acre, even though there are allot of fruit tress and Oak trees there are no squirrels for some reason. Anyway, I saw one in my backyard and it went under a sheet of plywood laying on the ground. I went over to check it out and all I saw was a large hole, so I reckon I have a ground squirrel, which I have never seen around these parts...figure it must of been hiding in someone's bale of hay and got transported into this area.

At first I got all excited and loaded up my bow, just happens that it's new home is right under my 3-D target, but am reconsidering as I like non-destructive wildlife around my home.

The question, is there such a thing as just one ground squirrel? If there is just one will it be happy with just one hole or are they like gophers (which we have plenty of) and make holes all over the place?

I feel like Cesar looking for a thumbs up or thumbs down regarding this critters life!

One squirrel is too many. God's second mistake must die.

However, I am no hand-wringing druid. YMMV.

Not today, please.

Anniversary...
Bullwinkle and Rocky made their debut this day in 1964.

It is big, bigger than tree squirrels I have seen. About the size of a chiwowa(sp) dog with a fur coat on!

Appears to be just sticking to one hole, and only eating the fruit that has fallen off the trees...since they are not found in this area maybe there will only be one?

Doesn't seem likely. After all, where would it have come from?

Ground squirrel is kinda generic too. Some people consider groundhogs to be ground squirrels and some not, regardless of their actual taxonomic classification. (It wasn't as big as a ground hog, was it?)

But then my knowledge of critterage is minimal on the west coast varieties. All my edumacation is midwest/eastern species.

And it's spelled c-h-i-h-u-a-h-u-a. Think chi-hooa-hooa for pronunciation and you'll be able to spell it every time. :D

That sounds like a ground hog to me. Ground squirrels round here aren't much different sizewise than tree squirrels. Ground hogs on the other hand range from little praire dog lookin things to 25lb pigs. I'd shoot it either way, eventually that fruit and stuff is gonna be gone and it will have to look for other sources of food until next summer. Which could result in damage to your property.
My grandpa had one get into his woodworking shop once when he left the door open on a nice day. It got shut in, cause he didn't know about it and it ate the better part of a window sill before he found it a day or so later.:uhoh:

Don't go to laughing at chiwowows. I once saw one kill a Great Dane.

Yup.

Stuck in his throat.

No ground hogs in California. It was a ground squirrel. Put a judo point on an arrow and shoot the ground squirrel. It is a varmint.

dont kill the damn thing, its probally the only one in the neighborhood, let it multiply then shoot some, that way you can do it more than once.

Neat trick for it to multiply, if it is the only one.

D.C., administer of TheFiringLine.com, had a certain zeal for dispathing them on her farm in So. Cali. She once managed to step away from her baby's cradle at naptime, stalk up to a tree along the fenceline, and record a 120 yd kill with her tuned 10-.22!

Hey, don't laugh. I had a chihuahua when I was growing up. He was supposed to be a purebred, but we later figured that daddy was a Boston Terrier, after I learned it's possible to have more than one daddy to a litter. He had the markings for it, and was built like a miniature Swarzenegger. Rippling muscles on a dog!

Anyway, he was a terror. Folks who knew us then still tell stories about him. He routinely thrashed dogs 3 times his size. One time he chased 3 German shepherds away from their own home. He was blazingly fast, and they just couldn't get teeth on him.

He liked to run between their front legs and, uh, well, Sam did remind us that this is a family board. :what:

:D

He died as he lived - chasing a dog 3 times his size and gaining on him. A car intervened. :(

Our Oleg Volk brought to light a rare variation of the Chijuajua...

The CHIAJUAJUA.

Small hunting dog that grows it's own ghillie suit.:D
