RCBS .308 die question from newbie

Just getting things together to begin reloading so plese bear with my for a long explanation of what may be a simple problem. Purchased a used RCBS 308 die set from a local gun shop that looked to be in very good condition. Set up a RCBS Jr and inserted the sizing die in accordance with instructions. A case with expended primer was lubricated and set in the press. When attempting to remove the primer and resize the case I was unable to insert it the last 1/2 inch into the die. Tried another fired case with the same results. Took the die completely apart and found no obvious reason for the failure to complete the resizing (throw on the press was not complete). Reassembled and tried again with the same results - even tried to lubricate the inside of the nect a tad, backed off the primer removal pin and tried again. Went next door and used my neighbors Jr and his RCBS die. Both cases that wouldn't work in my die worked in his. What the heck can be going on?

Your buddy lubed the cases properly (outside).

Could be one of several things...
• The neighbor's wife wants to see you more often
• The neighbor used the distraction to go see your wife
• The decapping (de-priming) pin is not centered properly in the used set of dies and is striking the inside bottom of the case. You inspected the die, but did you roll the decapping pin on the table top to see if it was bent? I bought a brand new set of RCBS dies and the pin was not centered. Getting/keeping the pin dead center is not always easy.

Look inside the case and tell me if you see one or two flash holes. If one, something isn't lined up properly. If two, you aint gonna git anywhere with it, so stop now.
OOPsss, guessing the neighbor checked the holes, so we can rule that one out? Sorry, not much help here. :banghead::banghead:

Are you sure you set up your die properly in the press? Take the decapper pin out of the die and try to run the case into the die and see what happens. What happens when you run in one of the cases your neighbor resized? What brand is headstamped on your cases? Military ammo primers are crimped in and can be a bear to punch out.

Cases were lubed properly - worked in his die without any additional lube. Wiped clean and relubed with his spray lube and still wouldn't work in my die. (Tried inside on neck lube per the Lyman reloading book when all else failed.)
Of the multiple attempts in my die, one test was to completely remove the depriming pin. Still no success.

there may be something wrong with the die, call RCBS (they have an 800 number) all their products have a lifetime warranty.

RCBS customer service has been very good the few times I've had to deal with them. Good luck.

Just on the off chance, are you positive it is a 308 die? If you took the decapper out of the die and it still wouldn't go in, I think I would stop right there and figure it out before going any farther.

Thanks for the input. This forum is a godsend for anyone new to reloading.
The die is stamped 308. The log sheet that comes with the die set and instructions has the previous owner's notes on his reloads so it must have worked at some point. Will call RCBS tomorrow and see if they can help.

The previous owner may have put something in it so that all it resizes is the neck. Take out the decapping pin and see if there is anything stuffed back in there.
