Where can I get a custom dagger made?

Good Evening,

I have a sketch for a custom dagger I would like to have made. Actually, a set of two. Does anyone have an recommendations for someone who will make custom knives built to order? These daggers are designed to be VERY utilitarian in nature, fit and finish is not important, strength is. I have never had any experience with custom knives before and I am not sure where to look. Thanks.

I don't know if I'll get in trouble for posting a link to another forum, but

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=789

That's a forum I frequent, as I'm beginning to get into smithing myself. Hundreds of people who make knives frequent those forums, good luck!

I answered the PM, look forward to the drawings to see if it's something I'm able to make. :)

Breed

Wheeler

Acawi

Llewellyn

have all made knives for group buys here. Breed and Wheeler forge their blades. Acawi forges or stock reduces his blades. Don stock reduces. Kim, Gary and Fuad all have daggers in their inventory. I haven't seen a dagger from Don, but feel certain he won't have any trouble making one.

Well what he wants is a full integral knife made from one piece of steel. This will be very expensive and time consuming to make and I told him I can't do it. Stock removal + integral= one big project! :)

Oh, yeah. That'll be costly to be well done.

I don't know if he is still making daggers. But I have a beautiful Dawson. I'll bet he could do it. But, like the otehrs say, it is going to be expensive.

Here's mine.

Yup , Barry is still making lots of diff models , though hollow grinds up around the integral hooks aint gonna be easy without some 1" or less wide wheels for the belt grinder.

It ain't gonna be cheap that is for sure.

Here is a thought on how to get the hollow grind on those guards:
Before heat treat, when the steel is still soft, use a chainsaw file to do stock removal and get the final shape and bevel. Then, depending on what equipment you have access to, use a mill, Dremel or somesuch with a spherical bit or stone to put the hollow grind in. Use a knife edge buff for finishing.

There are plenty of makers on bladeforums who could make this knife but as others have said, it's gonna cost you a pretty penny for a matching set. If you could live without integral bolsters, your project would become much more affordable. I could probably recommend a maker or two, at least someone who could point you in the right direction if you are still looking for a knifemaker. PM me if so...

I've also frequented blade forums for many years and from what i've seen there are some very talented knife makers there.

Indeed , lose the grinds on the guards and it becomes much more doable. And pass on the tapered tang , as with that much blade out there , it might not balance right ( because of the hole ) , not to mention tapering the tang takes away your clubbing idea ( more mass , better clubbin' ;) ).

I've had two makers tell me a ball end mill would be the only "practical" way to make the integral sharpened guards and that will still drive the price up. Doing it by hand would be very time consuming. It can be done, but it drives the time and effort (therefore, cost) up.

You could approach Gil Hibben. He is well known for his knifemaking. He also holds classes where he will teach you to make a blade, and you get to bring in your design and leave with it. His studio is just outside of Louisville.
