Remington 1858...

Ok to put powder and lubed felt pad under ball...
or is a filler a better choice?

Also how do you load your Walker?

I don't use lube felt wads, to me they're just another expense. 'Course I don't have a '58 either, all mine are Colt replicas. Fillers are only necessary if you load light charges and can't firmly seat the ball on the powder. Like a 15 grain powder load, then top it off with some corn meal or grits.

I usually use a 40 grain spout on my flask when I'm shooting my Walkers. It throws about 37 grains by weight, and makes a good strong load, but not overkill. In Cowboy Action handguns are limited to 1000 fps and that load is pushing the rules pretty close. BTW that's about the minimum load without needing some type of filler.

Then a squirt of Bore Butter over the bullets.

Try 15-20 grains of 3Fg, Cream of Wheat filler to 3/8 inch below the rim, plus round ball. Ram home. Put a dab of grease on the bullet. Shoot.

You will never get a consensus opinion on whether lubed felt wads or inert fillers are better. Just try both and use the one you like best. Same goes for grease/lube over the ball. Once you've tried them all then you can come back and join whichever side of the chorus you wish.

30 grains of Goex followed by Cream of Wheat to bring the .454 round ball up to a level at which it takes just a smidgeon of bore butter over and around the ball for lube and chain fire protection. The accuracy seems to be better with this setup and tube of BB doesn't disappear so fast.
