PALESTINE - A 56-year-old man remains in Anderson County Jail on a $10,000 bond on an attempted murder charge after a dispute over the quality of a piece of chicken, authorities said.

Palestine Assistant Police Chief Mike Medders said Albert Norris Anderson Jr., 56, allegedly shot Charles Edward Barrett, 54, in the foot with a 16-gauge shotgun for insulting the quality of his chicken. Barrett was taken to Palestine Regional Medical Center for treatment. Medders said he is recovering.

The shooting took place at 11:50 a.m. Sunday in the front yard of a residence at the 400 block of Texas Avenue.

A resident at the home called 911, Medders said.

Anderson lives across the street from the place the incident took place, he said.

Medders said Barrett was "insulting" Anderson's chicken and reportedly using expletives toward Anderson.

Medders said the residence has been the location of other disturbances in the past.

Back in the old days when vast herds of chickens were driven north to the railheads in Kansas, a crew might be forced to kill a dozen or more chicken insulters. The trails were lined with the graves of those who failed to show proper respect for fowl.
And woe to the cattleman whose cow stepped on a chicken! A mass of chicken vaqueros would cut out the offending cow and string it up on the spot!
The chicken towns up in Kansas were rough places that catered to the coarse tastes of the Chickenboys. A man could walk into a saloon with a bag of chicken nuggets and buy anything from opium to women to tee shirts imprinted with the slogan: "My Dad Drove a Herd of Chickens to Kansas, and All I Got Was This Lousy Shirt!"
The rich chicken buyers from Kentucky would step off the trains in their white suits to attend the vast chicken auctions and afterwards the money would flow and the dance halls would be be busy until 10:30 or even 11 o'clock - chicken people are early risers, what with all those roosters...

Those bad old days are long gone, but the spirit of the Chickenboys still hangs on in small towns on the vast Texas plains.

Sounds like somebody got drunk Saturday night again, and just kept on drinkin' when they got up...

Lots of people I know like a 16-gauge for shooting birds. First time I've heard of one being used for defending birds. I've heard of "pigeon grade" and "Silver Hawk" models and the like. I wonder: was this one of the special "Chicken Grade" shotguns with the genuine Melmac inlay and the engraving of the 1950 Ford pickup on the receiver?

It's going to be called "Lonesome Hen". It's about two old polloqueros who round up a huge herd of stolen Mexican chickens and drive them to Montana. Along the way they battle snakes, Mexicans, Commancheros and rogue fast food managers. One of them is in love with a hooker and the other has a weird thing for an old red hen.
A lot of people get shot, a few get hung and the chickens all get sore feet. It's a sweeping saga of the old west, the way it really was...
