I was wondering what is the prefered ammo with a .44spl with less then a 3" barrel, I've looked at alot and thus far the mag safe ammo has got my attention but I rather get an opionon from someone with more expierience.

Favority 44 special ammo?

Why, mine of course. Stuff I reload..

EZ question... :D

Truth be told, if I had to buy for defensive carry, I would buy the Winchester STHP or GDHP by Speer. Matter of fact, I do. I have a 3" 44 special and that is what I do carry..

However, that is my opinion

For .44 spl I mostly roll my own.
However for carry, I use CCI Blazers with 200 gr speed Gold Dot hollowpoints.

Georgia Arms' 'G44SC' is a Speer #4429 200gr Gold Dot, designed to open fully by 800 fps, atop a new Starline .44 S&W Special brass case. It's my .44 Special/Magnum personal protection round. I've chrono-ed them at 805 fps from my 2.5" 296, 840 from my 3" 696, and 875 fps from my 4" 629. They are $47/100 + shipping. Mild from the 696 or 629, it'll get your attention launched from the AirLite Ti 296.

I shot ~1.2k of the same bullet in the aluminum case Blazers from my 296, but they went up a lot at Academy Sports/Outdoors chains to ~$29/50. Order 200 from GA Arms and with s/h vs s/t, it's cheaper - and you get new brass cases. Besides, I had one Al cased Blazer split it's case in my SS 696, making extraction difficult.

As the others stated, I load my own, but Winchester Silver Tips would be my pick for factory carry ammo.

Coincidentally, it is also mine... ;)

Rossi 720, with a 3-inch tube; typically stuffed with the above mentioned blazer 200gr DTHP, although I have some silvertips laying around as well.

Corbon 165 gr. in the blue box for self defense.

For range time I roll my own as well.

They're mostly plinking ammo for me... my usual choice would be CCI Blazer, but lately I've wanted to try Doubletap's.

+1 on the Blazer 200gr GDHP, although I have shot the Corbon 165's out of a Rossi and they are HOT!

I'd stay away from the Glasers and other gimmic ammo and stick with good quality HP's. My experience with Glasers wasn't positive and when you need something to work as advertised isn't the time to find out it doesn't.

I bought a bunch of Winchester Silver tip hollow point ammo for my .44 Specials (3", 4", and 5" barrels) and have been pretty pleased with it.

It may not be the really hot stuff like Glaser or one of the others that you buy for at least a buck per round, but it does a pretty respectable job, and it's good enough for me. Anything much hotter wouldn't be very comfortable to shoot in a lightweight (like my Charter Arms Bulldog) handgun. I don't feel exactly unarmed carrying five rounds in a little pocket howitzer.

IIRC that's #4427. and I'm still using Speer till my Georgia arms ammo gets here.

Hey, someone read my post! Yippee!

I claim a 'senior moment'... it is Speer #4427. Thank you. BTW, I loaded some over 5.7gr Titegroup, a mid point from the data sheet. My loads, CCI Blazers, and GA Arms versions chrono-ed within the SD of the Blazers.

44 Special I load my own. Mostly load with Unique powder and 200 to 240gr cast bullets.

I want to get into loading my own ammo for my 44spl. What do I need to do/get/read?

Matt,
Search this site on the handloading section for starters. Go to a gun shop and look at the reloading dept. Buy a reloading manual (you'll wind up with several) I recommend you don't start with a progessive press start with a single stage one die at a time press. Then you'l learn all the details of assembilng a cartridge and know what to look for when your going faster on a progressive. If you decide to get a progessive automatic press you can always use the single stage press later, they are handy. Pay the extra for carbide dies. There's starter kits available with everything you need, check ebay as well as this site.

+1 for some version of the GDHP. Double Tap ammo has it as well.
