I'd like to see a full power 180 XTP for carry and hunting. The WW SILVERTIP load has now been weakend so much[last time I chrono'd it it was under 1200 fps] that I don't consider it viable. The Excellent shooting HORNADY 180 XTP loaded round is slow......we need doulbetap or somebody loading 180 XTP's close to 1275-1300 fps.

That, and reasonalbly price practice ammo[jacketed!], and we would be ahead of the curve!

More 155 gr. loads and some 165 gr. loads using the Gold-Dot.
Something with more power than the (.40 S&W level) Federal
hydra-shok 180, but with more control than the Silvertip.

Of course, 155 gr. Silvertips wouldn't be a bad idea:)

Texas Ammo Company makes some pretty good loads with the Hornady XTP bullet (200gr @ 1250fps :evil: ), but it is pretty pricey. What I would really like to see is a 165gr GoldDot at 1350fps+. Georgia Arms and ProLoad come close, but I think that they could increase their velocities by a bit. The 155gr GD should be pulling over 1400fps -- as long as the bullet can handle those velocities without fragmenting. In that case, I think that the XTP is a more robust bullet and a better choice. A 155gr XTP (with a revised HP cavity to ensure better expansion though clothing) at 1425fps would be the ticket... :evil:

I, too, would like to find cheaper practice ammo. The best that I've found in my area is $10/box for the Master Cartridge reloaded stuff. It is pretty good, and beats the $13.95 for the next cheapest price on Blazer, but I could shoot a lot more of it at $7.50/box. :)

Everything that I've read has stated that recently Winchester increased the fps on their Silvertips back to pre-watered-down levels. How long ago was your last chrony?

I'd like to see more reasonably-priced (some would say, "affordable") "practice" loads at velocities that approximate those of the premium high-performance 10mm loads. For example, most 10mm fans know that Texas Ammo and MCNETT's Double Tap line-up offer full-power 10mm in a variety of bullet-weights.

While GA's 180gn FMJ practice load is certainly affordable, its 1100fps is a bit anemic. How about a 180gn FMJ or, better still, a Sierra 190gn FPJ load @ 1290 fps to give those who prefer the hotter HP loads for carry something to shoot regularly at the range to keep their shooting skills and muscle-memory sharp?

A second 10mm load I'd like to see would be a quality 200gn 10mm/.40cal HP for self-defense use, like a Gold Dot or Golden Saber, loaded at genuinely "heavy & fast" velocities (and not 1050fps, like Hornady's factory 200gn XTP load).

But, as MCNETT has indicated, the 180gn GD begins to fragment at velocities above 1200fps, so that's probably close to the max for a 200gn GD also, if they made one. But the GS is a "tougher" bullet and holds together better at higher velocities, which is also why Double Tap's high-velocity 165gn & 180gn GS loads produce in excess of 700fpe.

But I'm thinking a 200gn Golden Saber @ 1250fps would "make my day," as it were. :)

Since I'll be switching over to MCNETT's DT 165gr. GS loading(1425fps/744 ft. lbs from stk G20), I think it would be nice to have a 165gr. Wally World white box at 1325~1350 fps.

It'll never happen, but hey we're wishing here aren't we?

While we're at it, have Federal switch from 180gr. lead to 180gr FMJ in the AE loading. Then it can be used in stock G20 barrels. I keep sending the emails to WW and Fed. and they keep ignoring me. Their loss!


Hmmm, come to think of it, I would've asked for a scream'in 135gr. FMJ to go with the 135gr. DT load, but IIRC no one makes a true 10mm 135gr. FMJ. Too bad. Nuts!

I have a couple of truly interesting ideas, but the next that I am coming out with is the 220 @ 1150fps from a G20 (hardcast to 16BHN amd made by Precision Bullets with a polymer coating to keep it from leading Glock bbls). I will, however, be looking at this poll to see what else 10mm fans want!

Also, I have shot literally thousands of Gold Dots at "real" 10mm velocities and have seen (in gelatin and wet phonebooks) the petals shear off leaving a small base to penetrate. I found this less than adequate for serious SD, so I moved on to the Golden Sabre and found it to be more forgiving of the high speeds that I require. Like I have said before, I would make a "run" of either Gold Dots or XTP's in 155 or 180gr if demand presents itself.

The hammer is a Colt spur hammer that was shortened a bit and re-shaped. Very cool looking in person, and 100% free of hammer bite. The grip safety is a standard GI-style grip safety re-shaped for a slightly higher grip and with the edges melted down. The gun originally had a commander hammer and grip safety from the factory, by the way... no stock Delta Elites that I know of had spur hammers and GI-style grip safeties. The setup is very comfortable, and somewhere between the standard grip safety and a beavertail in terms of how "high" the grip is.

Nice, but in both cases I'd replace the hammer and grip safety with Colt standard spur/GI types, as those are what my Gov't Model has and I find them perfectly comfortable. I'd also add an ambi safety.

The trick with the Dan Wessons is, again, FINDING them. Probably have just as much a chance of scoring a Delta Elite, really.

So far, the poll shows that an inexpensive 155FMJ load would be the most popular. Is this becausa it is the only choice that has is inexpensive, or is it a general consensus that a 155FMJ load is needed.

FWIW, I stuck it in the poll simply because all the other fairly cheap practice fodder is in heavier bullet weights (Georgia Arms, UMC and Federal AE is 180gr, and Blazers are 200gr), and variety is good. Some guns are more accurate with different bullet weights, & some people shoot lighter-weight bullets in their self defense loads. I'd say to load it up to about 1,200 ft/sec... well into "major" power factor, but not nuclear since most people don't want to beat up their guns 24/7.

THANK YOU for making 10mm ammunition at honest to goodness 10mm velocities. I want to buy some of your ammo, but I have a question as to whether or not I can just drive down to your place there in West Jordan (?) and pick it up. It seems silly to pay for shipping for 8 miles... ;)

FWIW, I find it interesting that I put the Gold Dot in my synopsis of "perfect" 10mm loads. I have seen first hand Gold Dot petal shearing when they are over stressed by shooting into water jugs. It severely reduces the expanded diameter of the bullet.

Do you have any of the Bonded GS bullets, or are you using the older design? How about Federal Tactical bullets? I also wonder how the reverse taper jacket on the Winchester Ranger would work at those velocities.

Personally, I think that the XTP is the most robust bullet design to handle extreme velocity spreads, but they have a habit of HP cavity clogging through clothing. Now a silicone tip in the HP cavity of the XTP might be the ticket... ;)

I've kept them the way that I got them when I bought them. FWIW, the grip safety on the Colt isn't a beavertail in the strictest sense of the word. It is a kind of modified, extended GI style. It never curves back up towards the hammer. The trigger on that thing is excellent, though.

I do like the classic lines of the standard GI grip safety and bobbed hammer, though. My next 1911 (hopefully in 10mm :evil: ) will most likely have those. :)

I don't yet have a 10mm but some cheap (in this caliber I'd call that $10-11 a box) practice ammo would go a long way to encourage me to finally give one a try. I do reload now, but I prefer to use factory ammo in my autos (I don't like chasing after brass).

Not trying to argue the point, but if the 155gn 10mm FMJ load is intended as a "practice" load, then shouldn't it at least approximate the same velocities as factory 10mm that uses a premium 155gn HP?

For example, in factory 10mm, CorBon offers a 150gn HP @ 1300fps. GA loads its 155gn GDHP @ 1375fps. ProLoad's 155gn GDHP is doing 1350fps. FWIW, Black Hills used to sell a 155gn JHP @ 1300fps.

It seems the "right" velocity window for a 155gn "practice" load would be at or near 1300fps. :)

A good cheep practice load is badly needed. I'm not too concerned with the weight of the bullet although 180 would be ideal. I did a front sight class, FS requires "new" ammo; no reloaded brass. The best deal I found was GA's premium Gold Dot defensive ammo. With the free shipping for a $300 order is was less than the best price I could find on blazer.

I voted for some cheap practice ammo. I just started shooting the 10mm, and am having trouble finding ammo at reasonable prices. So far I've only ran some CCI, but not sure how it stacks up.

Georgia Arms offers thier 180g FMJ for $10/50. The only problem is that you have to buy in bulk to save on shipping charges. I'm lucky in that I only live 40 miles away so shipping isn't a concern.

After I get my new G29 broken in, I look forward to shooting some DoubleTap to make the little hand cannon sing.

I would like to see a 155g FMJ practice round loaded to 1250-1350 velocities at a price that would allow me to shoot all day w/o selling my first born to pay for it.
