As a Canadian, is there a way....

I'm a Canadian citizen and incidentally a soldier. My parents are US citizens residing in Texas. Is there a way for me to get a CCW/CHL as a non resident visiting alien?

I would feel alot better being able to carry as I drive from Ontario to Texas with the Mrs and kids in the vehicle. It's a very long drive with lots of stops at rest stations, and as everyone knows when you're alone with the family in the middle of the night and you really can't get out of whatever just fell into your lap, the police are always just too far away.

As a side note, as far as I can tell, a Texas permit seems to be legal in every state that I would have to drive through from Ontario. Is this correct?

I believe you can still get the Utah CCW as a Canadian citizen.

This is the reply I received from CC.CA

Unfortunately Utah has suspended the issuance of CFP's to non-residents of the US. There is some legislation pending that will require applicants to be US residents, and there's even some question about whether or not they'll continue to issue to non-Utah residents period (so those in other US states may be out of luck as well).

Thank you for your interest, I'm sorry that we're not able to help. I have added your e-mail address to our mailing list and will let you know if the situation changes.

Have you looked in to getting a Florida permit? They issue non-resident permits, but I don't know if they will issue them to non U.S. citizens.

Florida requires US residency unless stationed outside the US with the US Military.

I don't believe so as my folks moved to the US and became citizens.

I am however patiently waiting (for about 4 years) for my green card. Not sure that will help much though.

As an FYI, ICE are really keeping an eye on green card holders to ensure they are actual permanent RESIDENT aliens. If you don't maintain residence, submit taxes etc people have had their GC pulled.

If you do get your GC you have almost all the privileges of a citizen, that includes applying for and receiving CCW where not explicitly prohibited by state CCW legislation, Wisconsin for example at the moment.
